funny old game 1 Posted August 9, 2014 Simple question, following our relatively successful if somewhat gentle pre season does anyone else feel we maybe a little off the pace come the big kick off tomorrow, I would have preferred games against the likes of Peterborough, Southend & Orient than second rate continental sides, maybe just nerves we''ll see OTBC
Jacks Back 0 Posted August 9, 2014 I''m sure once a few tackles have gone flying in, any players which are undercooked will quickly wake up
Norfolk Mustard 106 Posted August 9, 2014 Given we haven''t played many over-physical games I agree, we may be undercooked. More concerning is the number of injuries we''ve picked up in training and only playing against lightweight sides. We''ll need plenty of players to rotate once the tough stuff starts tomorrow... But at the end of the day, even if we played other British teams, they''d still be less physical than a competitive fixture. No one wants injuries in pre-season so you find teams don''t go for it hammer and tongs. We also haven''t only played against ''lightweight'' sides. And people really need to drop the totally uninformed view of foreign leagues. The Italian league can be every bit as physical as British leagues. The French leagues have come on a long way since a bit of a cash injection from the top end. Germany also doesn''t shirk physicality - just look at the German world cup squad! As for Spain - just watch Real Madrid or Barcelona or last season Atletico. Barcelona are one of the best teams on the ball and off it. They way they break up play, disrupt and prevent other teams from establishing a rhythm can at times be incredibly cynical. Folk need to wise up a little. English football is not the be all and end all any more.
Dubai Mark 0 Posted August 9, 2014 Chris Hoooghton must have arranged the pre season before he left.Seriously, the thing is that, it will always take a few games to get up to speed...we could get tonked and end up winning the league or win comfortably and then be off the pace for the rest of the season. That''s why you always get some crazy results early doors. That said, I certainly wont be complaining should we get a nice win...... chicken 0 Posted August 9, 2014
Undercooked?...........more like bloody raw imo.[:S]
Better than past it''s best though eh Wiz?I''m going to set a challenge for you. Before you post anything else, post three positive things about Norwich City on here. I am genuinely getting concerned for the mental health of some of our so called supporters owing to their extreme negativity, perhaps owing to some slight the club has exacted upon them at some time in the past.I am fearful that if this mood of yours does not lift Wiz I may have to send around a medical expert to run some tests on your thyroid etc.

The argument I had was not against playing foreign sides per se, but more particularly having Celta Vigo as the final warm-up game. The point being that Celta Vigo were splitting their squad up, with two games in two days, and were still three weeks away from the start of their season. I wanted opponents much closer to the beginning of their season, such as a League One side, who would confront us with their likely starting eleven. As it happens it seems to have been a decent test for us, but in prospect it didn''t look the right choice.
chicken 0 Posted August 9, 2014 I can understand your point Purple. However, I think you can look to much into pre-season games. The real preparation is off the pitch. I''m always a bit dubious about the not turning up due to poor pre-season bit. The players don''t suddenly forget what football is, what this level is like. The most important thing is that the team gets out of the blocks early. The one thing that the Championship is more so than the premier league - forgiving. There are more games and that gives you more of a chance to make up for the odd slip.I tend not to get too het up about the first game of the season, you get some odd results owing to varying factors. For us, the important thing was to get that belief going again. Wolves should be full of it, they may go into the game tentative, but I think it''s more likely that they''ll be riding the wave of success and spirits will be high. The most you can hope for in their position is tough opposition at home on day one when you are fresh and that momentum will carry you on a bit even if you lose on the opening day.For us, we''d probably have preferred a home fixture against a struggling team, perhaps one that narrowly avoided relegation etc, to get us going through the gears again and get some straightforward points on the board. It''s why it is being televised. If we are pumped up and positive and believing we can go there and get a result - which we should, and work hard as a team it could be a really entertaining clash. Wolves want to announce their return, we want to state we are only on loan for a season. The only problem you have with Leagu One teams etc, is that you have to pick them carefully. You don''t want an overly aggressive side the week before the season kicks off. Some teams might see it as an opportunity to send a warning to the league they are in. In some ways it is better off playing better European opposition and testing tactics, formations and getting fitness under the belt.I do understand what you are saying though. mrs miggins 0 Posted August 9, 2014 Adams has said we''re as ready as we can be, bar a few injuries which can''t be helped, we''ll soon find out i guess. (and I can''t wait personally to see how the team play in the first few games)
BroadstairsR 2,273 Posted August 9, 2014 Surely the finely-honed thoroughbreds that are professional footballers these days are more prone to injuries before they reach a peak of fitness.Their delicate joints and muscles need a gradual introduction towards the fray.In this sense, our much-maligned Italian tour was correct. The real aim of this was high altitude training with apparently brings athletes to fitness faster.Even the first mis-matched game was only intended for the training ground and was never to be a proper stadium encounter.I am tending to put my faith in the army of backroom specialists the club employs now and as, even with a gentle introduction, the injuries have stacked up, I am glad our pre-season games were not more physically testing. Guest Posted August 9, 2014 Everything NCFC is under an intense scutiny nowadays.Social media sites, forum sites and even club web sites have given the public an insatiable appetite for all things NCFC.We hardly knew the results of pre season years ago but now each match, no matter the standard of the opposition, is seen to be a barometer of the teams progress and ability.Considering we haven''t won an opening game for nigh on a dozen seasons, I don''t think they have any bearing apart from introducing new tactics or players to each other. SwindonCanary 457 Posted August 9, 2014 I wasn''t too happy how Celta Vigo cut us apart, and how we showed a lack of bite in taking the lead again. I hope Adams has been working on it in training.
Norfolk Mustard 106 Posted August 9, 2014 The whole of football seems fragile these days. If you so much as cough near a goalkeeper nowadays he gets a free-kick. Where''s the fun gone?Regarding pre-season fitness I suppose the days of hopping one-legged up Mousehold Hills and heading medicine balls have long gone!.. Branston Pickle 4,145 Posted August 9, 2014 I can''t see why people are getting so preoccupied by this ''undercooked'' thing when we''ve nothing to go on, either way. Celta Vigo, for instance, will be plying their trade at the top end of the best league in the world so is it surprising that they can play a bit? When all is said and done preseason means little, the idea is to get match sharp, train hard and get some togetherness in the squad. We won''t know for sure how we''ve done until later

Perhaps that is a little more important than getting our players to practice taking kicks, elbows and pushes?
