Captain Michael Turner? - The Sun.

Recommended Posts

Peterborough 0 Norwich 2

The Sun

Holt, 31, led Norwich to 12th in the Premier League last season but has competition for the skipper’s role from new signing Michael Turner from Sunderland.

Canaries boss Hughton’s side beat Posh with goals from Steve Morison and James Vaughan yesterday.

And he said: “Michael is of a good age with Premier League experience. But there are a lot of potential captains here.”

Sounds like he was asked a direct question and the Sun being the sun didnt make reference to the question or context they asked something along the lines of "Will you be making Turner new club captain?", making it sound like it''s something Hughton just came out with.

In my opinion, as so some who was highly unimpressed with holt and or his agent for the way things went over his contract... He is our leader and talisman and is my first choice for captain. The only thing is, I dnt believe hold will start every game so there will have to be so done else too. I''d say Russell Martin but then that leads to wonder whether or not he''ll be in the starting eleven consistently either. Maybe it will be snodders?!?

The only sure starter is Ruddy, so by that token, maybe he should be captain.    I don''t normally like goalkeepers or forwards being captain.  So Turner -  if he is seen to be a regular starter - could make a good captain.    However, the Horse has never let us down as captain, so if we forget the close season saga - which may anyway have been the agent''s fault - Holt should still be the number one choice.

I expect Holt will be, but ive not seen turner for a few years. The good thing is, our best eleven is scattered with former captains. Spoilt for choice.

A good club captain has to have many qualities on and off the pitch.

Respected by his team mates, be of great character and, when playing, a massive leader.

So that would be er erm oh Grant Holt.

Its got to be a player who is likely to start every game bar injuries so I would go for Howson or Snodgrass myself.

We have just spent had a long hard summer getting Holt back on side. It really wouldn''t make sense to put his nose out of joint again by stripping him of the captaincy. I still think regardless of that he is the best man for the job. He is the talisman and the man we will all be looking to when the chips are down this season.
spot on jacko a lot of people miss this point. When the going gets tough holt rallies the troops. When holt is not on the pitch and it gets tough we go missing. We have loads of former captains of other clubs but who says they were any good and who''s knows who will start most games?

The other candidates are relatively late newcomers, - Howson, Snodgrass, Butterfiield,  so I think that it is bwetween two well known characters with enthusiasm - Holt and Martin R. For the coming year Holt is likely to be an ever-present, barring injury, whereas Martin may miss some games. In the more distant future, 2013-14, or 2014-15, I can see Howson being captain - intelligent and committed, but much depends on the inter-player personal chemistry.

Whatever we may think about the rather distressing "pout" and threat by Holt a month or two back, on and off the pitch he has generally been a positive influence and example, so I would plump for him.

It''s a little difficult given his strop in the close-season and the overweight issue at the start of last season, but he has rarely let us down perfornance & effort wise and he''s such a big character I would re-appoint him. But Hughton may have to quietly and firmly let him know who is in charge like Lambert had to do on occassion.

If not Holt, my gut feeling would be Jonny Howson.

Certainly not someone who has just joined the group.
Well done. And I also tend to agree with your observations.  Three time player of the season, three year deal on (relatively) big money -he is the right man to lead us provided he''s 100% for the cause now he''s got what he wanted in terms of a contract. This does assume he will be the first choice centre-forward (and only striker in a 4-5-1) which is, I think, a fair assumption.  However, given he will not last 90 minutes each week, who gets the armband when he''s off? - and the answer to that is (I think) Martin (R) or Howson.

Chopsey knew you wouldn''t give Bury Yellow a straight answer and would avoid it with a smart retort.

And you didn''t........and you did! [:S]

last season mick mccarthy bought in roger johnson and made him skipper..it obviously upset the dressing room as wolves and johnson personally had disastrous seasons... obviously holty has mega respect from the rest of the lads it would be a huge risk giving turner the armband OTBC

IMPO, I think Holty will retain the captain''s armband but not too sure whether he deserves too after his and his agent''s petulant behaviour at the end of last season.

If Hughton is seriously considering making a change my vote would be for Jonny Howson.

People are saying Howson - fine, he captained Feeds and I''ve nowt against him - but what do some people know that the rest of us don''t about the other criteria, e.g. his standing and authority with our players?
