Swidon away at Southampton tonight

Recommended Posts

Tough game for them and away, where as we get a week of rest and training.... they might even pick up the odd suspension!

Its definitely welcome if tiredness might be a factor on Saturday. Would be nice if Southampton got something tonight because a win would lift Swindon up to 66 points. So despite their slump they would still be knocking on the door as much as Charlton etc.

Must disagree. A Swindon win or a draw would suit us best.

Anyone thinking taht swindon cam overhaul us know has not really looked at the league or form

What we don''t need is Southampton (or Leeds) coming up with us.

A couple of runty little clubs would be better. A season or two of huffing and puffing (Posh/Scunthorpe) will see them back to where they belong, where as the other two would be an equal challenge to us.

With the bust Pompey and soon to be Hull plus the huffed and puffed Burnley coming down this could be the best chance we have of going straight through to the Premiership.

Southampton won''t come up whether they win tonight or not, and Swindon are a competitor to us. A Southampton win is favourable for us.

Millwall are the main threat to Leeds, Swindon won''t maintain their challenge for the rest of the season

I can''t see Southampton making the cut, but I also think Swindon will come up short too. Draw would be good, or a saints win with Swindon having 3 sent off.

I think Swindon will lose tonight and Saturday!!!

i wouldnt worry about so''ton...they wont make up 15 points in 11 games...no way. it would mean they''d have to pretty much win every game and one of the teams placed 3rd-7th would have to have relegation form. Before tonight they had a very slim chance, but they''ve blown it now.

kept on reading in the press how so''ton were the best team in the league...funny how we are 21 points ahead of them even if you discount their 10pts deduction? bizzare journalism from hacks again!

Mathematically Swindon can catch us but even if they manage to get within 9 points of us after Saturdays game that is still a lot of points to make up with just 9 games to go. Even if we only managed to get 10 points from our last 9 games it would leave them needing to win 7 of their last 9 to overtake us and I don''t see it happening.

Crikey, some people need to calm down a bit. We are currently 12 points ahead of 3rd place, a situation with 10 games to go that any side in any division in any country would settle for.

Defeat at Swindon would only cost us 3 points, no more, and consider the alternative: a win would put potentially put us 15pts clear of 3rd with 9 games to go.

Yes it will be hard on Saturday but the game against us will be their 5th in 14 days, so they will (hopefully) be tired and without players (several injured at the mo + a sending off tonight).

That said, whilst we have a very healthy cushion, we don''t want to start to take anything at all for granted.

I dont honestly think Southampton would make the play-offs with the 10 points added, theyre too inconsistent. They beat Leeds and Huddersfield at home but lose to Tranmere away and Swindon tonight, theyre not as good as people make out.

eh ?

So "Swindon are a competitor to us ..... or .... won''t maintain their challenge for the rest of the season ".

Had Southampton won tonight they would have been 13 points off the playoffs with a game in hand (possible 3 points). Which could mean 10 points behind.

Odd that fans dismiss that 10 point gap as unrealistic, yet worry about a possible 9 point gap between us and 3rd place.

Other than Charlton, Southampton have a fairly easy run in. Tonight''s defeat suggests they do not have the consistency to make use of those games.

Looking ahead the best for us is for Leeds to be pushed into the playoffs and then miss out on a playoff place.

To put our position into perspective if out of the next six games we win only ONE out of -

Swindon

Leeds

Tranmere

Stockport

MKDons

Orient

Then it would require the chasing pack to win ALL SIX of their games to overhaul us.

Is us only picking up 3 points out of 18 feasible ?

Is it likewise feasible that one of those four will win SIX in a row ?

(assuming goal difference doesn''t shift drastically)

We are up, it''s only waiting to see when we win the title so let''s start looking to what will benefit us next season.

What is also to are advantage is teams around us playing each other in the next few weeks. Leeds v Millwall then Leeds v Swindon so if Leeds win both granted they could overtake us but it would be points droped by our 2 main rivals for 3rd. Alternatively Leeds loosing both would shurley see us increasing are gap at the top even if we lost are home game against Leeds

Just to make this a little simpler for you to understand city1st:

I think Swindon are our competition given they are 12 points behind us, but I don''t think that they will be able to keep up there challenge until the end of the season. What I think will happen in the future doesn''t change what I perceive to be a fact now.

So it''s not "contradicting" mr bump. The first sentence is my opinion on the state of things now, the second my thoughts on what will happen between now and the end of the season.

Right now Swindon are the biggest threat to us because if we lose on Saturday it means that they have won. That is the ONLY definate of the forthcoming weekend!
