Forget signings until July 1st

Recommended Posts

I noticed that you lot, and a lot of other clubs are looking forward to signing players from tomorrow. The signings cannot go through until July 1st when the transfer window opens . Any club can get a verbal agreement but it means nothing until July 1st and that includes out of contract players.

as far as I know you can sign a player whenever you want but the transfer won''t actually go throught until the transfer window opens on July 1st.  e.g earnie''s move to forest is complete but he will officially be transferred on the 1st July!

It also means that if we''re after out of contract players we''ll have to wait until after June 30th to get them on a free, because that''s when contracts usually expire.

Exactly. You can still sign them but as you know money is god so a lot of players will say yes but wait and see if other clubs come in before signing on the bottom line. It''s the same for all of us.

Yes you can sign any player anytime of the year, but Players cannot be registered with a new club until July 1st - it is the same every season.

There doesn''t actually seem to be a great deal of stuff on this - I looked it up last week and saw that it was June (on Wiki).  The FA site doesn''t have much, but certainly there was an article written in mid-June 2005 (I think) which babbles on about the window having been open a couple of weeks - ie it opened on 1 June.  The UEFA site doesn''t say much at all, but do a search on transfer windows and it shows this from January 2002 (re: standardising things):

"Summer and winter periods Europe''s national football associations are being recommended to introduce harmonised transfer periods for European professional football covering a summer period, from the end of the domestic season to 31 August, and a winter period running from 1 to 31 January. European football''s governing body said that appropriate provisions would be made for countries whose seasons run in accordance with the calendar year.  [It goes on to say that these would be from 1 July - but irrelevant as we don''t have a calendar year season].

Presumably this was refined but I''m boogered if I can find anything on it.

Put it this way.  If GR holds a press conference next week and says we have signed Wes Hoolahan/anyone else, we can take it that they will be playing for us.  Period.

Sorry but where does it say the 1st of June?

As far as i''m aware window opens when most european leagues ''officially'' start their new season. I.e. returning from international duty or holiday and preparing for forthcoming friendlies. So therefore the 1st of July. Anyone can be signed to a pre-contract agreement until the opening of the window.

Just thought I''d say my bit
