Fen Canary 1,456 Posted August 29 Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I was completely unaware they’re now seeding the clubs playing in Europe to keep them apart. Not only do they get a bye to the third round, they’re now given an easier game to reach the fourth by being unable to be drawn against each other. Every year I’m starting to hate football that little bit more, and the utter selfishness of the big clubs is largely the reason for it. Every rule change in the last 30 years has been to their benefit at the expense of everybody else. They scrapped the halving of gate receipts, got extra time scrapped in the league cup, have got replays scrapped in the FA cup, we now have hundreds of subs in a game which benefits those with larger squads, European competitions are forever expanding. They couldn’t even let the lower league clubs have the league trophy to themselves, they had to flood it with their under 21 teams. Utter greed! https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cd9de5kq7vlo

GodlyOtsemobor 2,830 Posted August 29 (edited) There should be a third cup just for the EFL, no PL team involvement. Edited August 29 by GodlyOtsemobor I know there's the paint trophy, but that's just for L1 + L2
Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man 4,614 Posted August 29 The EFL had little choice. The Champions League starts on the midweek of week commencing September 16, whereas the Europa League starts the week after. As a result, if a Champions League team drew a Europa League team, there would not have been a spare midweek slot to play the game. This was announced back in May and it was said at the time that they would only seed it to prevent a Champions League team facing a Europa League one, so two Champions League sides or two from the Europa League could, in theory, play each other. The BBC article in the OP suggests that teams playing in those two competitions were kept completely apart however, so maybe the plan was tweaked.

Utter greed! https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cd9de5kq7vlo I can see the logic of keeping them apart. The teams in Europe have a CL/EL/EC fixture in either the second or third week of Sept, so keeping them apart avoids the scenario where they can not schedule the LC fixture in either week e.g. one has a Euro tie in second week, the other in the third. While it does give them an easier draw, it is also a competition that none of them want to be in....
Bovril 264 Posted August 29 Just scrap the league cup, nobody wants it. Then make the FA Cup introduce all league teams, including Premier League teams, from Round 1.

Saves the big 6 from playing the U21s in the early League Cup rounds. They can try that in the FA Cup but we'll get some surprise knock outs and early exits. All the big clubs being in round 1 increases the chances of the minnows getting a big draw, so spreads a bit of money around the place to support the lower leagues. Roll the prize money up to make the FA Cup more lucrative as well, more money per round progressed. Unfortunately the Premier League more likely to replace the League Cup with a 'Premier Cup' with 20 teams in it, knowing them, and then try and play the game in Saudi Arabia in front of 500 people and a goat.
wr4sb 66 Posted August 29 Talking of draws, I wonder how fixed the new Champions League fixtures will be to the 'bigger clubs', with opposition teams supposedly being picked by computer behind the scenes...

I like it too. The League Cup is probably past its sell by date. Even Championship clubs aren't really arsed nowadays, never mind the Premier League ones. Scrap the League Cup, and as a compromise to the League One/Two sides who might be disappointed to see their chances of playing a big team in a cup reduced, you can merge the EFL Cup with the EFL Trophy so that it's for Championship, League One and League Two sides. The smaller sides might get a game against a big Championship club and the Championship sides have the carrot of a Wembley final dangled. 6 minutes ago, wr4sb said: Talking of draws, I wonder how fixed the new Champions League fixtures will be to the 'bigger clubs', with opposition teams supposedly being picked by computer behind the scenes... With the new format, a live draw isn't feasible. And given that each team will play eight games, against two from each of the four pots, it will likely be fairer than the old format which always seemed to give Manchester City four of their six matches against two minnows.
