How was Gilmour today?

Recommended Posts

Did OK. Liverpool's high press meant he was pushed back most of the game but I thought our midfield 3 all had positive moments today.

 And how was Mclean?

I could tell you the answer to that before the game kicked off.

Very poor.

Better, as he had a bit more space to work with.

McLean should have had a good assist today had we had a striker/wide man on the pitch who was more confident.

I was surprised to see him in the starting XI today. I'd have gone for PLM, Kenny and Normann.

How did he do?

I think it was Chris Reeve that put up stats during the week from the Man City game and Gilmour was ahead across quite a few categories in successful passes, chances created, Crosses etc.

Given that it seems he played very well last week, in the same team as PLM,  it surprises me that so many people seemed to expect him to drop out.

Thought he did fine today, as well as the rest anyway.

Thought he was poor again to be honest, gave the ball away and was bossed off the ball easily. His set pieces are what frustrates more than anything.

I'd much rather we concentrate on our own players now than him in regards to the starting XI.

He may well go on to be a top class midfielder (I'm doubting that though), but he's not what we need right now, and as he's not one of our youngsters I'm not interested one bit in giving him games to develop himself. Rather play Rowe in all honesty.

Still our most consistent midfielder though Ricardo.

Our midfield 3 were really good... until they weren't. Most of their work was (unsurprisingly) off the ball but they looked to pick up passes in tight areas and move it on quickly. Obviously possession was lost a number of times, but we also had a continuing threat on the break. The real work was in the disciplined positioning and tracking of the Liverpool players outside our box, which they all did with (mostly) great success for the first 60 minutes.

Unfortunately, as the second half wore on, Normann looked exhausted, Gilmour started getting drawn out of position and McLean had a number of headless chicken moments where he vacated the space outside our box chasing the ball and left a huge gap for Liverpool to exploit, which they did.
