The Raptor 1,573 Posted November 10, 2021 (edited) Yes and no. Yes it's a bit ****ish however If they say yes to them there are 37885 worthy charities banging on the door... Perhaps boxing day should always be charity day. Different shirts and clubs pick a collective charity or an important local one Edited November 10, 2021 by The Raptor

TheGunnShow 7,377 Posted November 10, 2021 Yeah, the problem is the precedent it sets. Although the notion of setting up Boxing Day as a charity day against homelessness would be quite fitting considering that Boxing Day got its origins from the boxes used for collecting alms. So, I like what @The Raptor proposed there as it goes back to the old traditions of the day, instead of the overcommercialised crapfest it now is.
Taylor324 36 Posted November 10, 2021 Yeah! Why should the multi Billion industry we support stop to help homeless veterans at Xmas? Lets just extend the futile act of taking the knee from 3 seconds to 4 seconds - That should keep the homeless happy on Boxing Day Bah humbug!

Hmm, explain why it's "left" wing politics when charity has been a "right" wing way of delivery for aeons? Don't confuse charity with state delivery of services. What has been proposed is a very "right" wing answer to the problem. The "left" wing solution would be to remove (however it took) the homeless from the streets, surely?😉 Edited November 11, 2021 by shefcanary

thebigfeller 200 Posted November 11, 2021 Imagine how dead inside someone must be to think helping homeless people is 'political'. It makes me want to throw up.
Jim Smith 2,610 Posted November 11, 2021 To be fair, Simon Jordan explained it quite well. Shelter just came up with this idea and basically tried to rail road the premier league into doing it despite the fact it’s against the competition rules. Admirable a cause as it might be (snd I’m sure many clubs would be willing to bend the rules) what if every charity did the same? How do you decide which charities get a day and which dont? What if I decided that for my charity one day a year every game should only be an hour long? Easy to look at the headline and think it’s shameful but ultimately you can’t just decide someone else is going to operate their business differently for a day and then get irate when they refuse to do so. If clubs or the premier league want to raise money for shelter on Boxing Day then I’m sure there are many ways they can do so.

As I understand it the rules allow each club to change the sponsors on their shirt one day each season to do this.
Gordon Bennett 914 Posted November 11, 2021 The way I read it is that it's as much about awareness and stimulating conversation, a bit like growing a mo in November. Anyway the football league are running with it which makes the PL look even worse but I understand the counter arguments being made on here too
Ward 3 484 Posted November 11, 2021 I'm not a racist or against gays/trans people but if such an idea was given for BLM or LGBT it'll be seen as a great gesture. Bit like taking the knee and the rainbow laces.
