Yet another stadium get's renamed

Recommended Posts

Not quite as bad as 'Select Car Leasing Stadium' that Reading recently announced and all but it's still pretty amusing. Also pretty neat new badge that, props to Swansea for coming up with something decent. Anyway think it's safe to say we never want Carrow Road renamed right? The 'Lotus racing sports cars and tires arena' just does not have a good ring to it does it? 😉

I'm probably in a minority on this, but I wouldn't care if we sold the naming rights to Carrow Road for a few seasons. It's only ever a temporary thing, and if it brings a ton of extra money into the club then why not? If you ask a Birmingham fan where they play, they'll tell you St Andrew's, not the Trillion Trophy Stadium (first one that came to mind for some reason, although there are loads of others). In the same way, nobody refers to the 'Regency Security Stand', it'll always be the River End to us.

Obviously it's contingent upon being done sensitively... the 'Aviva Carrow Road Stadium' or the 'Lotus Stadium' is more palatable than 'The Angry Birds Nest' or whatever.

thing is, it is only the numpties who use sponsors names

it is the League Cup, the FA cup etc

the South Stand and the River End...... can anyone ever imagine the Barclay being anything else ?

thankfully there are some with a bit of sense, as with Hull City staying as Hull City

Whatever next? Drinking your pint without downing it in one swig? Eating a burger with knife and fork?

I hate all this. Nobody for example called St.James Park The Sports Direct Arena, likewise with this everyone is still going to call it The Liberty except commentators.

The only good example of this is what QPR did with their stadium name which was changed in memorial to a murdered youth player. But in general I am completely against this, feels very souless and American and has no place in British football

Its usually all about ££££ and sponsorships / brand awareness and the like.

The QPR one is, as you saf differnent, and I assume the Swansea one isnt money orientated.

I'm just happy people are not picking on me for once. Know how it feels, not very nice. Still they will get bored and move on to someone else at some point sadly you just gotta roll with it

Arguably the paradox would be Bolton's ground as the then "new" ground was known as the Reebok Stadium from the beginning as I think that was due to the naming rights being sold from the get-go. Bit tricky when it's been called the Macron and the University of Bolton Stadium since then. Same would apply to the Allianz-Arena in Munich, as those were sold for 30 years IIRC.

Do agree that it's a bit plastic, but also agree that fans wouldn't refer to it as much else than the stadium name, so wouldn't be averse to us getting a couple of extra million for it per year.

Let's just pull the thread now then.....We're all victims.....

It was a perfectly sensible and decent thread until you made an inane and irrelevant comment.

Stick to the plays on words - you're pretty good at those.

Doubt it causes any heartache for the Jacks or supporters of the Ospreys. As far as Welsh regional rugby is concerned the name of the stadium is the least of their worries, as for the Liberty, it never caught on and I suspect most Swans fans are still more emotionally tied to the Vetch, which when I last was down there was a community allotment 😀

Funny thing is, it was called the liberty stadium because of corporate sponsorship...
