Law 12 states , a direct free kick is awarded where a player "Impedes an opponent with contact." The idea that correct interpretations were not applied because it was a local derby gives you some idea why the Ref is stuck in the Championship . Have a look at the penalty decision in the recent Newcastle / West Ham game . Perfect example of the application of "contact" and impeding. A nonsense decision but that's where the letter of the Law has taken us. This was far more obvious. VAR would have slowed it down and overturned the ref. That would then have taken us into Red Card territory. Law 12 - Sending off offences denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender's goal
