flecky76 0 Posted June 6, 2012 Not sure if this has been previously discussed but one issue that is out there which has not really been widely mentioned is that of John Ruddy and his contract situation. He has 1 year remaining on his initial 3-year deal. Given that he was named in the recent England squad and that he could expect this to continue next season, his name is now in lights and it will certainly not go un-noticed by other top teams that an England squad goalkeeper will be available on a free transfer in just 12 months time.So as I see it, the club has a few choices available to them:1) First and foremost, get Ruddy to sign a contract extension this summer. However, I would not think this would be an easy sell, particularly what has happened as of late at Carrow Road. Not only will Ruddy want to see what happens over the next few months at Carrow Road, bigger clubs may begin to sniff around. If this is a ''No'', or ''Not at this time'', then alarm bells should begin to sound. Remember that a player moving on a ''Bosman'' free transfer is likely to see their wages rise considerably, given the club saves on a transfer fee that would otherwise be the case.2) Sell him this summer. The goalkeeping market transfer fee wise is not massively high, but an England regular with 12 months remaining on his contract, with Premiership experience and at a young age should easily command between £2m and £4m I reckon.3) Let him go on a free next summer, but knowing that by using him this year, he could help us remain in the Premier League another season.Tricky conundrum looms I reckon. Given that the rewards on offer for another season in the Premiership equates to £40m +, I do ear on the side of 3), but we will all need to recognise that this will mean we would likely end up with diddly squat for him. It may also depend on realistically how much £££ we would get for him if we sold him this summer - does that potential transfer fee make it viable to seel now or risk losing him for nothing next year??? Supermarket Prodigy 0 Posted June 6, 2012 Ruddy has a young lad settled, family up and running, he was born in St Ives.He knows he''s likely to be number 1 here for the foreseeable future, Hughton would be a good appointment, I''m fairly relaxed with this one. I think he was genuinely desperate to sign for Norwich at the time because it was a good club near to home. I think if he is offered good money and a 3/4 year deal he would sign straight away. Great keeper and hopefully will do a Drury and be number 1 here for many years.
Lets be aving you! 0 Posted June 6, 2012 "Ruddy has a young lad settled, family up and running, he was born in St Ives." And Ruddy was so fed up at Everton - with the lack of first-team chances and the constant spells out on loan - that he admitted in interview that he seriously thought about giving up the game. I suspect he would therefore think twice about going to another club while apparently happily settled at Norwich, given that he is the No 1 goalkeeper here and has a long career ahead of him. Mahogany 0 Posted June 6, 2012 Give him a bit boost to his clean sheet bonus, won''t cost us much and we could probably write it off as a charitable donation as he gives it to Help For Heroes. On a related issue I doubt we''ll be able to keep all three keepers for too long. Rudd and Steer and going to want 1st team football, or at least to be a definite number 2. I can see Rudd moving if Ruddy sings a new contract.
tom cavendish 0 Posted June 6, 2012 It seems likely that Norwich will have an option to extend the contract as that has been in the contract of other players.Ruddy won''t want to be a bench warmer at another club, and he might look forward to training with the new goalkeeping coach who has a great reputation. If he goes, then Hughton knows Fraser Forster and some other good keepers. Pyro Pete 2,353 Posted June 6, 2012 I wouldn''t be surprised to see Ruddy offered a significantly better & longer contract over the summer. It would be good business for both parties.

pete 371 Posted June 7, 2012 I am sure if we stay up again this year new contracts will be in the offing lots of 3 year contracts with 2 years left for City players.
star_manic 0 Posted June 7, 2012 the only fly in the ointment in this hypothesis is that dave watson is not named as among hughtons staff following him to carrow road.
