A Small Example Of Where Your Money Goes

Recommended Posts

Let me add some recent comparative data to the debate. No special discounts involved.

On our latest visit to the UK during May this year, Mrs Bly and I stayed at

Cardiff 4* for 110 daily room rate including all taxes annd  full breakfast

London 4* (attached by walkway to Gatwick North Terminal) for 104 daily inc. taxes exc. breakfast

Norfolk 3* for 56.90 daily room rate including all taxes and full breakfast

............................

Last time I remember staying in a Glasgow 4* for 86 daily room rate including all taxes and full breakfast.

..........................

So you can put those figures in the pot and stir it

But a party of 48? Nobody has taken on that and broken it down yet!!
I am sure there are many examples of waste hidden deep in the ledgers of the club but, personally, I don''t think this is one of them.

If you are correctthat the budget for travel, accommodation and medical expenses was £800k it does sound quite high but, when you consider the cost of scans, specialist investigations etc., I would imagine that the ''medical'' element must have been a fair chunk of that; frankly, it seems a bit bizarre to lump medical expenses along with travel and accommodation.

To return to the tour, the idea of taking the (vastly changed) squad away together to gel, get to know each other and work on some fitness and tactics for the new season seems eminently sensible- apart from the benefit of assessing the triallists and seeing how they fit in with the established players. As far as the reported costs are concerned, they actually sound pretty reasonable.

It really does seem that some people will attack anything and everything, however irrational. I imagine that, if there had been no pre season tour, there would have been complaints about the lack of preparation and how Gunn does not understand the need to build a team spirit...

For Heaven''s sake, there are enough easy targets to attack with the way this club has been run without resorting to mindless carping.

To give you an example of what people are saying.  Last week I was staying in a hotel for work.  The published rate was US$275.  We contacted them and told them that we (6 people) would like to stay there, but they need to reduce the rate.  We actually paid $150.  If with 6 people we can knock off nearly 50%, I''m sure they will have negotiated a decent rate for 48.  That is assuming that the local club doesn''t already have a good rate.  Do you really think that Wigan will pay the full rate at Dunston hall when they come down for the friendly?

Also something that hasn''t been mentioned, that the gate receipts are often used to pay the expenses and a fee to the visiting team.  So actually, it is unlikely to be coming out of our budget!

Depends entirely on what the bookings look like which of course mirror the seasons - and the economy. The kaleidoscope of rates offered by Travelodge is an excellent example.

Apparently occupancy levels for UK hotels are pretty down this year, so the chances of  significant discounts are fairly good - although not guaranteed by any means.

Lets forget the fact that we are a Division 3 (old money) club, not a Premiership club and should manage our resources accordingly.
I''m amazed you haven''t phoned the hotel yet to ascertain the exact cost and the size of the party as you did with companies house and form 288b. It''s either ''We''re a Division Three club not a Division One club'' or ''We''re a League One club not a Premiership club''. Sort of okay for a first attempt but you might have asked where Chris Goreham is staying (and, after all, you are helping to pay for both City and the BBC).  My guess is that it won''t be with Mr and Mrs McTavish at the Bideaweewhile Temperance Hotel (be back before ten, mind).[:P]

Absolutely - I think they should have made the players sleep under sheets of newspaper on park benches, before foraging in bins for food - with a celebrity chef on the board Im sure she could rustle up a good meal out of discarded half eaten pizzas and an old burger bun

Well, Travelodge would probably be cleaner than 90% of the hotels in St Andrews.

I mean we don''t want the lads coming down with swine flu or colneybarbequetummy do we.

The figures are from paperwork seen at the club so they are 100% correct including the 48 in the touring party.

I assume a discount was already taken into account as even this can''t be that stupid.
Was this a quote you saw?  Can''t be an invoice as they are still there and wouldnt have been generated yet so you dont actually know the costs.  How many are staying at each hotel as you said there are three different places they are staying? This is just another thread to moan.  Perhaps the club should hitchhike on their 23 away matches this season or go on the supporters coach.

It was not an attempted parody.  It was a parody but some of the target audience might have missed it for reasons I can only guess it.

Quite, Mustachio - and also, remember what division we were in (just promoted to the Prem!).

IMO this whole thing is rather a red herring: I guess you could question whether we should go on tour at all (I am undecided) but so many sides do and surely wouldn''t if they didn''t think it was worthwhile. Such trips are usually quite heavily sponsored, but even if they aren''t, I doubt the cost is anything like the opening thread is trying to imply.

Its fact! It was Doncaster''s analysis and was published in the local newspapers a few months ago. BTW it was actual spend and not a budget.

As for the spend re the Scotland trip, if we had Premiership or Championship sized budgets then it wouldn''t be an issue. May I suggest that people remember we are now a Division 3 (old money) club with a much smaller resource base.

TFAI was not suggesting that your figure was not correct, merely that, in

the absence of a quoted source, I was accepting it at face value.I

am glad to hear the figure was an ''actual spend'' and thus related to

our historic expenditure as a Championship club. I would assume that

the new budget figure will be carefully scrutinised to ensure it

reflects our straitened circumstances.I would still be

interested to know how much of the £800k related to (one presumes,

essential) medical expenses as opposed to travel and accommodation

since there is the risk of creating mountains out of molehills if, say

£700k was spent on keeping players fit and on the field (i.e. football

related on-field expenditure) rather than putting them up in luxury in a shared room at

a Travellodge for an away game.Oh and, by the way, I am still a

great supporter of the Scottish tour for all the reasons previously

outlined and consider the money well spent.Apart from anything else, I am not quite sure that bringing

triallists to Pontins for a kickabout on the beach would help them make

up their minds that we are a serious club for whom they might like to

play.
