colneycanary 0 Posted July 16, 2008 Late Norwich bid to snatch ThompsonStockport County and Norwich City were locked in a tug-of-war over Linfield striker Peter Thompson last night. The Canaries made contact with the Blues yesterday before tabling an improved bid for the 24-year-old.It is expected that Football League One side Stockport will renew their efforts to sign the Northern Ireland international by increasing their iADVERTISEMENTnitial £100,000 offer, but Norwich appear to be in pole position as the race for Thompson gathers pace.Linfield’s board has insisted no deal – if any – will be completed until after tonight’s massive Champions League clash with Dinamo Zagreb.Thompson (right) is expected to play against the Croatians, contrary to reports that he would sit out the first qualifying round, first leg fixture at Windsor Park.It has been a rollercoaster fortnight for the predatory striker.Scottish Premier League club Kilmarnock were first to make their move – twice having package deals in the region of £150,000 turned down. Then came the approach by Stockport on Monday with an offer of £100,000 plus bonuses for the prized frontman. But now Championship outfit Norwich are poised to pounce, and a deal could be rubber stamped in the next 24 hours.Glenn Roeder was reportedly on his way to Belfast to watch Thompson in action, but it is believed the Canaries boss will travel with his squad for a pre-season friendly in Gorleson instead.Thompson appeared to be on his way to Stockport yesterday after Blues boss Jeffrey admitted talks were at an advanced stage. But Linfield’s board last night insisted no deal would be completed before tonight’s game.In a statement, the club said: “No transfer deal has been completed for Peter Thompson and any possible move will not be considered until the Linfield management meets to discuss the matter after Wednesday’s game with Zagreb.“Peter Thompson is a signed and registered Linfield player who is available to play in Wednesday’s European game.“It has been made clear that any decision on the player’s transfer will be taken with full approval of the board.”

colneycanary 0 Posted July 16, 2008 He seems to be a bit of a goal machine. Could be the 20+ goals a season we are crying out for!
still holding out for new heroes 0 Posted July 16, 2008 154 goals in 234 games....interesting, we may at last have a scouting network rather than just signing strikers who score against us...
Hog 0 Posted July 16, 2008 Could be the bargain signing of the year or yet another sign of our clubs growing financial crisis.
Inch High aka Inchy.. 405 Posted July 16, 2008 Not sure he''ll get the freedom in the box in the championship he enjoys over there, and can a part time footballer can make such a big step up? If we do have a punt for him it may take a while to get him up to championship levels of fitness. If the price is right he may be worth a look at.Don''t think he''s the answer to our striker problems though.
Syteanric 1 Posted July 16, 2008 if we can get him cheap (under 100k) i say go for it.. low outlay and we can always offload him for a small fee if he turns out crap...jas :)

LORD FOXY LOWE 0 Posted July 16, 2008 looks good to me, strong in the air, obviously an eye for goal. Can he make the step up? Kevin Phillips and Les Ferdinand came from non league and had great careers, take a punt I reckon.

Hog 0 Posted July 16, 2008 Linfield are on Sky Sports 1 tonight against some very strong opposition so we could see what he is like first hand.
Lincs CR 0 Posted July 16, 2008 Yeah they play Dynamo Zagreb in the first leg qualifier for the UEFA Cup. Would be a good chance to see how good he is over the length of a game rather that by his "Youtube Goals" videos. At the price... surely we can outbid and offer more wages than Stockport can! If we can''t then God help us...
rtfm 0 Posted July 16, 2008 About 15mins ago the BBC was saying that Stockport''s offer had been accepted and he was unlikely to play tonight, but now the are reporting that we have also put in an offer for him and it is unclear whether he will play.
