Tom NCFC 0 Posted February 7, 2007 "Canaries boss Peter Grant has labelled the reserve system as a waste of time after seeing yet another second-string outing bite the dust"http://new.pinkun.com/content/ncfc/story.aspx?brand=PINKUNOnline&category=Norwich&tBrand=PinkUnOnline&tCategory=Norwich&itemid=NOED07%20Feb%202007%2008%3A25%3A04%3A930The reserve system is an absolute waste of time at the moment, Grant''s had 4 reserve games to see how the fringe and youth players are getting on. If only we had a proper league to run along side the football league structure. Like Premiership reserves in a league, Championships reserve in a league together..wouldn''t it make much more sense
USAcanary 0 Posted February 7, 2007 Ok, so why cant the club arrange more freindly games with local sides.Didnt we know before the season started we would have very many reserve games.Even organise a little local cup competition played over several weeks with a round robin stage. There must be local clubs who would like to bring in Norwich reserves for one night for extra revenueTeams such as Kings Lynn would put up a good match. In the blood 0 Posted February 7, 2007 I seem to remeber that there used to be a Norwich City ''A'' side that played in the local leagues maybe 20 or 30 years ago. I''m not sure who qualified to play for the team but that may not be feasible until the next season. I''m sure some of the sides within a 60 miles of Norwich would welcome a behind closed doors, mid-afternoon, 35 minute-a-half, semi-serious, warm up the fringe players type game at certain times during the season. 0ridgemanddMMyyyy0Falseen-USTrue 0 Posted February 7, 2007 I totally agree that the reserve set up is poor but why oh why couldn''t those at the top see that this was another disadvantage of losing Premiership status. No good moaning now.
lucky green trainers 0 Posted February 7, 2007 here''s a suggestion - if the prem teams won''t play champ teams at reserve level, why don''t the F.A. sponsor reserve leagues in the champs and coca cola. lets face it, with TV money, the FA are awash with dirty cash - why not spend some of this easy dosh on the prems poor relations. having proper reserve matches will assist in the development of young english and welsh players, which could then be snapped up by prem clubs are their talent blossoms. our young boys can''t get a game for love or money - it must be harming their development. if the FA or people with clout cared about the grass roots - they''d do something about it, rather than basking in the reflected the glory of the prem and do nowt. 0ridgemanddMMyyyy0Falseen-USTrue 0 Posted February 7, 2007 I think the FA are only interested in the Premiership, the Championship and lower leagues are run by the Football League.
Alex Harvey-Jones 0 Posted February 8, 2007 Yes the reserve set up is a joke and its hardly going to help young players come through. Something has to be done especially about the number of games called off!
Saint Canary 0 Posted February 8, 2007 I agree the reserve set up is a bit of joke but surely it has always been so. How many times have we heard managers say that reserve football doesn''t prepare players for the first team? This is why tops clubs let their younger players go out on loan rather than blood them in reserve matches.I find it bizarre for Grant to say that McVeigh is suffering from playing no reserve matchs because even when he did he never looked bothered.Lets face it City need to enter a reserve side in a regional league to give them any real sort of competitive matches and I''m suprised they have not looked into it considering they knew what changes were coming. Syteanric 1 Posted February 8, 2007 Quite Topical, they talk about Resevre football in the latest 4-4-2 and make reference as to how Premiership teams value their reserve league.. and that its a way of seeing the stars of the future for free before they make the grade. It does mention that below the Premiership the reserve Set up is leaughable.. but the article states that the FA are looking at a way of improving the reserve setup for teams outside the top flight... whether that would involve a cup, Promotion/Relegation in a bigger more competitive structure is open to speculation.. but something does need to be done. For youngsters its a step up before the rigours of 1st team football.. it gets them phsyically better, mentally stronger and the element of competition is still there.. its also Vital for 1st teamers coming back from Injury that they get lower tempo games under their belts... and as for those 1st teamers out of favour it is a run out.. incase a scout of another side is watching. the reserves are more important than people might think and its good the FA are acknowledging this now i thinkjas :)
Rudolph Hucker 0 Posted February 8, 2007 I agree our young players need more competitive football to instill in them a sense of competition. This should be useful when playing competetive teams like Spain (and Macedonia).
