McVeigh - Left out again?

Recommended Posts

Ooops, I meant "Out Left again".

Does anyone remember how effective McVeigh was (circa 02/03/04) cutting in from the left, or getting in and around the corner of the penalty area?

I don''t think McVeigh has played out there since the arrival of Huckerby, and probably rightly so. But perhaps putting Paul in his most effective position can bring out the best in him again?

My line up for Hull would be as follows:

                                               Gallacher

Colin                  Doc (yes, Doc!)        Shackell            Drury

   Hughes (Croft!)     Etuhu             Safri               McVeigh

                                                         Huckerby
                            Earnshaw

I agree with the idea of huckerby back up front, he''s causing more problems on the left for our defense than the other team. But now we have two people up front who can''t head the ball, I think its about time the club put its foot down and made Huckerby head the ball, is it a case of can''t or won''t? I wouldn''t start with Hughes, I think I''d rather give Eagle a start as he''s looking like he''s already got more ability than Hughes. Defence wise we really don''t have many options and personally I wouldn''t play the Doc, maybe if we had started with Dublin on Sunday it would have been a different story. McVeigh can be a good player but he seems to go missing for periods of play, for what reason I don''t know but lets hope it can be sorted. But to be honest overall as a team we have very limited options, its time we started to see whether these youth players are going to be any good and personally I''d be willing to fill the bench with them for this weekends game.

Colin      Dublin       Shackell        Drury       Eagle      Etuhu      Safri     McViegh                                         Huckerby                   Earnshaw

If McVeigh does play on Saturday I''m guessing it will be on the right what with Chadwick and Croft both out. If you then stick Eagle on the left and push Hucks up front with Earnshaw I think the team has a more balanced look to it.

I hope that McVeigh can come in and prove his worth because he is undoubtedly a very talented player and his performances on the left were one of the highlights of our play-off season. Unfortunately he just doesn''t seem to have the same desire anymore, whether that''s down to being messed around by NW or the age old problem of earning enough money so he doesn''t really have to bother anymore I don''t know. He just seems to have one or two games where he lets everyone see what we''re missing by not having him in the team followed by two or three completely abject performances where he looks completely disinterested. It''s probably last chance saloontime for him to be honest which is a shame as he''s obviously got bags of talent.

Oh and I''d swap The Doc for Dublin, I know it''s a bit short-termist (?) but we just look a lot better organised when he''s in the defence.

Bruce''s Header, you mean some of our players would end up close together enough to actually pass to the other and receive a pass back?! Plus, McVeigh is great up front - if he and Hucks end up inter-changing it can''t be that bad, can it?

And "Give Grant a Chance" - you would play the slow, weak Jarvis up front as a "target" plus McVeigh on the right where he''s always been awful? Plus keeping our left side exposed with Huckerby?

Hmmmm. And my line up is "crap"?

Eagle is a possibility on the right, UEA, but I''m not sure sticking him in an unfamiliar position would help his game.

Here''s My tupenn''th if anyone is interested:

                              Gallacher

Colin          Dublin                Shackell               Drury

Huckerby   Etuhu                  Safri                    Eagle

                  McVeigh/RyJarvis

                                         Earnshaw

Bench: Camp, Hughes, RoJarvis/Spillane, Thorne, McVeigh/RyJarvis

I believe that Ryan Jarvis is more of a supporting striker than target man, as is PMV - would play in the same kind of role as rooney, cahill and adebayor (and i know these aren''t entirely identical).

how can anyone want to play mcveigh ?

he has been dreadful for the past 3 seasons.

his ratings in the press has been 4 for his last 2-3 games

imo its time for him to move on.

Agreed, always makes me laugh when Neil Adams brings up the subject of McVeigh. In our Prem season it was "if only we could get him back to the form of 2 seasons ago". Now he''s still banging on about "if only we could get him back to the form he was in 4 seasons ago"...it''s time for him to go, he''s clearly not interested anymore, which is a shame. More wasted talent.

I agree with the "if only" sentiments about McVeigh and he has been pretty poor for the last 3 seasons. However, he is one of the few players who are capable of finding a pass to release Earnshaw. I believe for one reason or another McVeigh stopped being effective when Huckerby came to the club. For this reason there maybe some mileage in Mook''s suggestion of trying him again on the left, although I can see the same problems as Bruces Header in that Huck''s and McVeigh would play in the same space when we attack.

It may be that Huckerbt and McVeigh just aren''t compatible in the same side.

huckerby cannot play on the left in a 4-4-2, we just get overun in the middle.

at least with 4-5-1 we have more bodies in there to sort of cover hucks lack of defensive work

Its a sad day indeed if we cant play hux and mcveigh together for fears of them running into each other;  they are two of the capable and intelligent footballers at the club and if they can work a space as big as a quarter of a pitch (opponents left side) effectively then they and the coaches deserve instant dismissal.

That tendency never stops henry working the left flank well with the gooners left midfielder does it?

McVeighs best days have always come when he is played as a second striker;  he is a forward who is small and so been tried in central midfield as well as on both flanks which do not suit his game.  He is that current sad specimen of a footballer - good in one position only.

Despite his ability he is not physically cut out for the hustle and bustle of midfield.  His best position is as a second striker or more indulgently in a more traditional 4-3-3 where he sits just behind the 2 strikers.

One of the few high points of last season was his enforced return to the front line from the plymouth to brighton games due to injury.  He played imaginative creative football that stood out from the rest of the team.   He scored and set up goals, yet when the injured returned he was dropped to midfield where his performances disappeared.

If we are to play WLY it has to be in either of those to roles;  would this work?  I think it would

Colin Doc/Dublin Shax Drury

     Robinson  Safri  Etuhu

                     WLY

               Earnie  Hux

If it cant work against Hull at home it cant ever work!

With subs of  Hughes, Spillane, Jarvis and Eagle (assuming Doc injured) we would also have cover and options if it doesnt work.

Mook your line-up is c*ap because you have included two of our worst player, Doherty and Hughes.

[/quote]

Nobody to play instead of Hughes, and Doherty is not one of our worst players. In fact, in the first five games this season, he was one of the best. Not to mention last season, when he was pretty damn good in a dreaful team.

Although people have noticed that he fouls people, nothing like that old hero Mr Mackay who never fouled anyone. Never got yellow cards. Never got sent off. Never got skinned. Never got outjumped. Ridiculous!!

The only thing we miss with Malks is his leadership, otherwise Doherty can do everything Malky could/can.

Anyway, you''ll change your mind when he starts playing well again.

Ok ZLF, I take your point about Henry at the arse and yes it should be possible for Hux and McVeigh to play together on the left hand side and they should really cause the opposition untold problems while doing so. I just feel they both want to get wide and then cut in rather than maybe combine to make space for eachother.

I quite like the team you set out on here for the Hull game, it''s nearly a diamond and would probably be a diamond cuz Safri would probably end up just in front of the back four, which in turn would bring the midfield deeper and possibly isolate Earnie and Hux up front. I''m sorry,  I know I''m being negative.

What we need is to play your formation and for Doherty/Dublin and Shackell to become imposing characters at the back and continually push the whole side further upfield so when McVeigh has the ball he''s in a position to make a pass in areas that really hurt the opposition.

on his day (and he doesnt have it that often!) Paul McVeigh is the best player at the club I think.. even more so than hucks and Earnie.

He has shown in the past how capable he is of turning a game, and his pinpoint pass for Earnie vs sunderland indicates great vision. if only he could perform on a consistent basis rather than coming on and not giving a toss... he''d be a hell of a player!

jas :)

I don''t think McVeigh has the same hunger for the game as he did from about 2001 to 2004.I think this is because of the often shabby way he was treated by Worthington, hardly giving him a look in during the Premiership season and generally seeming eager to scapegoat him for any poor performance.  He is a talented player, but I dont know if we''ll ever really see this again at Norwich.
