Ken Hairy 3,815 Posted July 22, 2023 (edited) Just be typical that the Aussies are going to retain the Ashes because of sodding rain. No question in my mind if we'd have been able to play on and win this test we'd have won the final one too. ****ty English weather. Branston Pickle 3,760 Posted July 22, 2023 Just checked the forecast - thought people were saying it was better tomorrow but if anything looks worse! Just have to hope it blows through or heads further north. It would be a massive shame if it was ruined by the weather, and having a one-off decider at the Oval next week would have been fantastic. Looks like rain will return about 4ish, but then it's clear from 6-8, so light permitting might get an hour before 7, if we can get them down to the tail then maybe just need a couple of hours of clear weather tomorrow. Conditions should be pretty favourable for the bowlers, just need to avoid the ball getting too wet.

Branston Pickle 3,760 Posted July 22, 2023 This has been a distinctly underwhelming little passage of play, we haven’t really looked like threatening a wicket (I’m hoping to talk one up….)

Branston Pickle 3,760 Posted July 22, 2023 No joy - looks like they decided to turn up to this session. Still think we should have declared at lunch yesterday, am sure we’d have had some more joy last night.

king canary 7,734 Posted July 23, 2023 Root is right about cricket needing to evolve its rules. There is no need to stick to resolutely stick to 11am starts at 7pk finishes if the light and weather allows it. Play until 90 overs are done as it's supposed to be. Also need to look at reserve days or similar. Watching on the the biggest prizes in test cricket get decided by weather forecasts is the kind of thing that'll put potential new fans of the sport off. Absolutely true - though the players can do plenty about the dire over rates, for starters. In Championship matches they have to average 16 an hour (with allowances for stoppages/taking wickets) or they get docked points. And they do play until they are done with the 96 in a day*. I am pretty sure they aren’t even managing 13 an hour this series. Edit: *adjusted for rain delays Edited July 23, 2023 by Branston Pickle

You'd need rules around batsmen pretending to be hurt like Labuschagne yesterday.
Canary73 178 Posted July 23, 2023 Equally if the weather is set in, the ground is sodden and the forecast poor then they should be looking to call it off rather than drag it out. Most fans have gone. The championship games affected by rain yesterday were called off at lunchtime if not before. I've been at test matches before and one days where they give infrequent announcements and are happy to keep people in the ground at the bar etc when there is genuinely no prospect of play. They are hanging on in the hope that they don't have to pay refunds for a wash out.
Hank shoots Skyler 2,094 Posted July 23, 2023 Gutted - I had £20 on us to win the ashes after we went 0-2 down, actually thought we were going to do it as well. Really unjust for the most dominant game from either team to be called off like this.
