Sheva 123 Posted November 28, 2022 (edited) Maurice ( Monty ) Norman Mainly known for his time with Spurs playing in their famous 60’s double winning team and England, has died. From Mulbarton, where he learnt to play football on their common, he joined Norwich City, where he was an outstanding young Center back. If not for a serious injury would most probably have been in the England World Cup winning side of ‘66’. Personally I’ve been told by former professionals, he was the best defender, if not player, ever to come from out of Norfolk. I was told how as a very young player for Norwich res, he was playing against Chelsea, who’s Center forward was a lad called Bobby Smith. Both were extremely hard and neither backed down. Later they were both to sign for Spurs and won the double together, as well as play for England. It was Montys ambition to play for a big London club, he did that, but he was a local boy, not best known to Norwich supporters, although one of the very best and a really nice man, a ‘gentle giant’. Only just within the compass of my memory. I remember him going to Spurs and in part exchange we got Johnny Gavin, my boyhood favourite player.

keelansgrandad 6,679 Posted November 28, 2022 Never saw him play but was revered in my family. He and Barry Bridges are two Norfolk lads who made the big time but today's generations will know little of them.
A Load of Squit 5,162 Posted November 28, 2022 Some nice memories here. https://www.where-are-they-now.co.uk/footballer/Norman+Maurice/3436 After his career ended through injury. Became assistant manager of a London garage, and then opened a wool shop with his wife in Frinton-on-sea, worked as a landscape gardener in Suffolk, retired living near Felixstowe. Reading the posts and comparing players is a nice segway into a clip I found on Youtube. I remember the players and some became world renowned. But to be quite honest, the football would be considered awful nowadays. I guess we just enjoyed it for what it was. https://youtu.be/R16iVR70hSA

In 1998 he told the Eastern Daily Press: “There were times when I’d play for Norwich, miss the last bus back and have to walk the five miles back home. I’d be feeding pigs at midnight.”
