On-topic but off topic - Tottenham

Recommended Posts

I think Spurs are one of the most fascinating teams to keep an eye on this close season.

Having had the Super League fiasco which has militarised fans against the current regime, I sort of expected a big push to bring fans back on side.

It started well with trying to bring Poch back, although I thought that probably would have been bad news for bringing Skipp back to Norwich given his history of bringing through youth. However, it seems Levy couldn't afford the compensation to extract him from PSG and that fell through.

Conte was the next boss linked - but he's just turned Spurs down. Shame - I thought that might have been a positive appointment for our chances of getting Skipp back.  But it's left egg on the faces of the club's executives.

And to top it off, they have Kane wanting to leave and Harry Winks strongly linked with Man Utd. Not sure I understand Utd's interest in Winks, but there you go.

It strikes me Spurs are a club in real decline at the moment.

Conte turning them down is a kick in the teeth considering they've just hired an ex Juve Sporting Director who he worked with before.

No Kane, Bale leaving and Son said to be 'having his head turned'

Think it's fair to say that without serious investment and replacements a midtable finish is not out of the realms of reality for them

Apparently one of the sticking points was Conte's reluctance to work with younger players.

I hope the deal gets resurrected, somehow!

This would suggest players like Skipp may be given a chance  which is bad for us..."Negotiations were at a standstill on Friday evening, with Spurs holding concerns over some of Conte's demands including a reluctance to work with promising young players at the club".

Spurs are in some trouble. Their new stadium has virtually bankrupted them and like Arsenal who did it a few years before it will take them some years to trade out of their current position - a problem extended by the losses brought on by the pandemic.

Players like Kane who are in their mid and late 20s probably have no chance of playing in a side capable of maintaining a title challenge - they could be 10 years away from that level of recovery. Their academy and younger players will therefore have to feature.

Levy's problem is going to be about maintaining credibility in the short term. No manager who wants to compete for the title will join them - their only real options remain the cups, but that doesn't attract the best managers. That's why he went back for Poch - trying to use the 'I made a mistake' argument to attract him back.

Add all of these issues to the fact that their incoming transfer policy over recent years has been pretty poor - they have spent some serious money on players who have turned out to be not quite good enough to take on the top teams. They really only have Kane left as a real asset - effectively they have to let him go so they can stay in people's heads as a 'top 6' club by letting his fee fund some acquisitions to supplement what they have; but in letting him go they fall further behind. Leicester have already left them behind; West Ham and Villa are coming up fast; Everton too. I can see Spurs being very solidly mid-table very soon.

It's not just clubs like Norwich who have some decisions to make this summer.

I think all the goings on at Spurs currently show we have zero chance of getting Skipp back, as said they're screwed financially the Kane money won't be reinvested and players like Skipp will be main players for them next season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ryan Mason announced as manager permanently.

Skipp is over. He will either play for Spurs or sold to boost the transfer pot for the new manager.

Looks like we'll just have to buy him!
