One of football's 'good' guys

Very sad. Undoubtedly a very genuine football man.

Credited with transforming Liverpool as a club, they were at real danger of losing their status in the game when he reminded them what winning felt like.

Terrible, terrible news. Worth reading about his life and times - he fell in love with Liverpool while watching from the terraces when studying/teaching on Merseyside and later returned as (joint) manager, so achieving the sort of thing any one of us might have dreamed about. We've lost so many of the good guys this year.

A true gent, always carried himself with dignity, sadly missed by football, family and friends.

Really sad news, been a run of horrible news in the football world lately, this year really has sucked.

RIP.

Always came across as hugely likeable.

Totally forgot about his spell at Villa- I quite like this cutting line at the bottom of his wikipidea entry about that spell- 'In Houllier's only season, Villa finished 9th: they have not finished higher than 15th since his departure'
