I wonder if Ian Austin realised when he started off in politics all those years ago, full of socialist ideals, that his  only claim to fame - or infame -  would be to have provided the Tory party led by the unspeakable Boris Johson with its potentially election-winning poster message.

It's hilarious seeing the right-wing press describing him as a "man of integrity". This is a bloke who wrung the living daylights out of the expenses system, regularly flipping his second home so that he could claim everything he possibly could out of the expenses system, who told Corbyn to sit and down and shut up whilst he was paying tribute to the victims of the invasion of Iraq, who accused a human-rights group of being Holocaust deniers despite it being absolutely false.

The d!ckhead now has a job working for a government department as a Prime Ministerial Trade Envoy. So what the headlines should really be is "subordinate of Boris Johnson urges people to vote for his boss because if Corbyn wins the self-serving little scrot may have to find another cash cow to milk".

Nick R sums it up nicely. The Nasty element of Labour will no doubt be out to deflate one of their own in due course. Anti Semitic aspects of Labour will have been a big issue for Austin.

Shame "Mr Integrity" doesn't get as riled at Islamophobia than he does about antisemitism. I always though racism was racism, seems Austin has a differing view.

Still, pleading with his soon to be former constituents not to vote for someone who will sack him is pretty desperate.

We will promote respectable and responsible politics wherever we can, and we will oppose extremism – wherever it comes from. 

We’ll oppose extremism of all kinds, whether it be on the far left or the hard right.”

As for detesting anti Semitism within his own Labour Party, I guess the fact that his adopted father narrowly escaped the holocaust, where most of his remaining family perished, could have influenced his view.

So you take Austin at his word when he says that, but when Corbyn says he isn't an anti-semite you become less trusting?

I completely agree that his ancestral story has influenced his view. He has gone so far the other way. He detests the fact that under Corbyn's Labour Palestinians now have a voice and can't abide the diminishing influence Labour Friend's of Israel now has in the Party. That isn't to say it has no voice, but under Blair Labour was absolutely a pro-Israel party, now it has a more critical view (as it should of an apartheid state), he cannot tolerate it. In many ways, he exhibits extremism in his pro-Israeli perspective; Israel = Good, Palestine = Bad and no evidence, however empirical, will cause him to deviate from this position. That's extremism.

It's not too dissimilar to the approach a lot of you lot adopt. Your presumption of veracity in Austin's view whilst you dismiss those you're disinclined to agree with (Corbyn) when they espouse something you believe to be false is an example of it. You need to be cynical of all politicians; don't drop your guard just because one of them currently is behaving in a way that suits your ends.

And as Diane Abbott has point out, Ian Austin has been a junior minister for 1 year and he announces he will not vote for Labour and the media provide him wall-to-wall coverage and try and beef up his credentials.

Ken Clarke, a man whose credentials do not need beefing up in the slightest, refuses to rule out NOT voting Conservative and it's give an iota of coverage.

But yes, let us all listen to the unthinking specials like paul moy and Jools claim some sort of left-wing media bias.

Docklands would still be old warehouses if there wasn't borrowing. Mind you, I think I preferred the old warehouses, although hasn't Delia got a pad up there somewhere.
