He is amazingly fit and strong and all that, but I don''t get cycling. I pedal down to the allotment most days but don''t understand the thrill of professional bike riding. Good to have a UK champion though, assuming he won something.

In an era of world class (genuinely amongst the best in tge world, none of this football faux world class premier league toss) British cyclists sir Bradley is the shining light even in the twilight of his career. Top effort.

Well done to BW.  Cycling is fine on a tailor made track, but on the road cyclists are a hazard - a danger to themselves and others.  Devoid of any road sense in quite a lot of cases, they should be made to pass an official cycling test before being allowed out.   Specific faults/dangers -Riding two abreast, regardless of traffic conditions (they are told it is safer to ride liker this, but it''s just not true)Riding in single file too close to each other, making overtaking them difficult, the more cyclists together, the bigger the hazard.Riding on pavements when the traffic is stopped in town, causing danger to pedestrians (saw two doing this in Keswick the other day and resultingin a nasty collision with someone innocently stepping out of a shop).Ignoring traffic lights. Not using cycle lanes when they are there and clearly marked,  why, I don''t know.......Not using lights or pathetically small lights and expecting to be seen at dusk and even darkerAccelerating suddenly and pedalling harder because they have reached a down slope, without consideration for traffic around them who are finding it difficult enough to judge when to overtake them.Thinking they own the road.Wearing headphones and therefore even more unaware of  things around themWearing unecessarily tight clothing shows everything they''ve got, from boils to beerguts. Wearing crash helmets that were designed for aliens. Treating the road like their own personal race track.

I know there are some decent cyclists out there (there must be, by the law of averages) but they are outnumbered by the sheer planks that get on their bikes and ride around without a thought for their own safety and that of other road users.  National test needed followed up by stringent fines for anyone caught riding dangerously.   Car drivers are a hazard too, but single brain cell cyclists that can ride at 40mph or more without so much as a single lesson are something that should be dealt with by more regulation.  Make them pay for lessons and a test - if they can afford all the fancy gear, they can afford a little towards becoming safer on the road, foir themselves and others.

[:$] Apologies, that is a bit ott, but then there are so many cyclists around up here and in the New Forest where I spend time too, that I''ve lost count of the amount of dangerous situations I''ve witnessed with cyclists.
congrats to WigginsOnly LDC can turn it in to something else entirely......just Why?
I''ve already apologised, but it wasn''t me who started a cycling thread on a football site. Cyclists in the parts of the uk I regularly inhabit are something of a problem and a real danger to themselves and others.  I have several friends who are cyclists and they agree with me.    Its all very well hero worshipping Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy et al - and they deserve it -  but they have inspired many more people to take up cycling and its a real issue around the country, maybe not in Norfolk so much where the roads are generally pretty open.

Let''s get your perception of the forum rules straight then, as this is helpful.
I think you are saying that if someone starts a thread which might not be directly relevant, it''s perfectly okay to jump in and download your thoughts and views on it - however irrelevant to the central subject - and whatever you decide to post isn''t your fault because someone else started the thread.
Is that right, or did I misinterpret your post?

To criticise a poster talking about cycling when the thread is about cycling is a bit rich, when said thread should not - strictly speaking - be there.    Anyhow, who says discussing the popularity and the effect of our cycling heroes is not central to the topic?   The more popular our heroes, the more people start following their sport.

Anyway, aren''t  we supposed to be avoiding each other?  People will talk................

Ha ha ha ha, nice try LDC. Yes, I started a cycling thread on a football page, so sue me. If sporting history deserves recognition, then so be it! ;-)

"There is some good fishing in the Lakes"

There will undoubtedly be a Catostomus commersonii dangling on the end of the line before the night is out.😄

Fishing is cruel, barbaric and spiteful and don''t get me started on the number of fishermen who walk through my village dropping worms and snaring young children on their hooks. Not to mention the ecosystem and the planet''s future survival chances. I mean, wellington boots are made of plastic so how eco are fishermen really? Exactly. Zero. Pathetic really, they should be carrying licences.

Sorry, bit of a rant but Herman, you brought fishing up on a cycling thread so screw you.

I apologise, but it wasn''t me who started fishing on a cycling thread on a football site. Fishermen in the parts of the uk I regularly inhabit are something of a problem

and a real danger to themselves and others.  I have several friends who

are fishermen and they agree with me.    Its all very well hero

worshipping Robson Green, Jeremy Wade et al - and they deserve it -

but they have inspired many more people to take up fishing and its a

real issue around the country, maybe not in Norfolk so much where the

rivers are generally pretty open.

I apologise in advance but it wasn''t me who started talking about friendship on a fishing post on a cycling thread on a football site.

What is a friend? I mean, when I speak to people in the various parts of the UK in which I live, they often talk about "friends" and as far as I can tell a friend is a pain in the ass you haven''t met yet. It''s all very well having positive feelings about other people - and I''ve nothing against that, good luck to those people - but I don''t understand why you would need to do that. IMO, all it will lead to is a trip somewhere and possibly a stay in a Holiday Inn. No good will come of that.

To criticise a poster talking about fishing when the thread is about

cycling, and then start talking about Friends (my favourite was Matthew Perry, hated the theme tune) is a bit rich, when said thread should not - strictly speaking -

I have nothing against the French, and the French do like to cycle as far as I can tell so at least you are a bit more on topic. I did meet one once, although he was rather timid and wasn''t really vocal enough about his passion for being French. On that basis I decided the French are a timid and quiet race because although I don''t get there very often, whenever I do it always seems like they are uneasy around me and just can''t relax and be normal like normal people.

I have also heard that French people like to fish, or at least some of them do. Good for them, it''s a healthy and positive way to spend their time instead of building hotels or divorcing their wives as I believe Lenny Henry has with Dawn French.

I still maintain Lenny Henry meant to stay married to Dawn French but perhaps he was a bit too cautious at first, which made the papers and media and general observers who weren''t really aware of what was really happening believe he was genuinely a bit negative and not really trying to make the marriage work whereas I saw someone being positive and doing the best he could with what he had in the best way he saw fit to achieve a successful marriage. I know some married people and they all think similarly, more or less.

By the way, what do you call a Frenchman lying in the sea? Pierre. I just made that up. My friends thought it was hilarious. I accept we all see things differently - that''s life - but you have to agree with me,
There''s some good fishing in the Lakes.
[:D] Some fishermen around the lakes pretty irresponsible, leaving debris, dead fish, empty cans, fishing line and other stuff around after their all nighters.  If you let your dog off around the lakes, you are liable to find that they will find human pooh around where fishermen have "dumped" and not cleared up after themselves.   Another hazard for dogs is left over chicken bones from their barbecues (cooked chicken bones splinter and can be dangerous to dogs).   Cycling fishermen are the worst.........

As for hotels like Premier Inn - no match for a Holiday Inn, I can tell you...........and don''t start me on the French - Dawn or otherwise...............[:P]
