Good piece on CHs return to SJP in todays paper (sorry, not looked for a link, reading it in folding version) concerning the impact he had there and may have here. Well worth a read if you can find it.

Also this weeks football maths claiming Grant is the love child of Kathy Burke and Prince Andrew - spookily accurate!

I stopped reading the Times when it went behind the paywall - don''t want to encourage them or others!

I think that moves to make people pay for previously free online content should be discouraged but obviously would support anyone''s freedom to pay if that is what they wished to do. Are you suggesting that the Pink Un should be a subscription service?

So you don''t believe in paying people for the work they do? Yes, I''d prefer all these to remain free and other means of income to be found through advertising to cover costs for instance, however, in the current financial state newspapers find themselves I have no qualms about paying what something is worth.

I see no problem with people getting paid for the work they do. However if I was to pay for this would that mean there would be no adverts? Of course there would be. Plus on the internet there is always another source of information. Why pay for the times when you can easily go to the guardian, bbc, sky sports etc. the list is endless. The only reason you have to pay for the times is because of Murdoch''s prediction that newpapers'' websites will have to be subscription based. He''s being proved wrong, not that he will ever admit it.

Now they want you to pay directly and still generate advertising revenue from your visit, if people don''t feel this is the right balance they don''t pay the subscription, sounds reasonable to me.

LE - of course I believe people should be paid for the work that they do. Are you saying that those who work for the Independent, Telegraph, Guardian etc, who do not charge a subscription are unpaid?

Do you believe that the Pink Un should be a subscription service, or should their journalists work for nothing?

OP - sorry to go off the thread of the original post.

Like Badger said, sorry OP.

Davo & SHA, of course it would not mean the end of adverts, just as you pay for a physical copy of the paper there are adverts, too. But advertising online does not cover costs. You only have to look at the Guardian, who have a continued increase in online viewers but are suffering financially. And my point about paying was not to fill the coffers of Murdoch’s online venture, but Badger’s moral indignation to paying for something that was once free.

Badger, of course I am not saying that, as I’m sure you are perfectly aware. As already mentioned, I would prefer these to remain free – knowledge should not be strictly available for the well-off.

On the point of the Pink’un, if they deemed that they were going to move to a subscription service and I felt I wanted to read their stuff, then, yes, I would. Especially as I live outside of Norfolk and so cannot purchase the paper.

I''m sorry LI, I am not fully sure of the point that you are making.

We seem to be in agreement on most things - we both wish for journalists to be paid; we prefer newspapers online versions to be free and that knowledge should not be limited to the well-off.

In my original post, I was making the point that I think that we should resist attempts to make us pay for content that was free. IMO if we don''t, other newspapers will follow suit - they would all happily take the extra profit! I am quite happy for others to pay if they wish, but it is not a stance that I support.

Badger, newspapers will follow suit and charge if it makes sense from a business point of view and they won''t if it doesn''t. Actually what amazes me is how much content on the internet IS free. Every day I look online at the Daily Mail, The Guardian, the Financial Times, the EDP and the Pink ''Un, Le Monde, L''Equipe, the Wshington Post and the New York Times, and every so often The Age in Australia. At the moment I only have to pay for the NYT and the FT.

Purple - I know that others will follow suit if it makes sense from a business point of view, which is why I stopped purchasing the Times. I know that it is a teaspoon in an ocean but others have done the same. I know that it is a tiny gesture but just trying to do my little bit to influence the business model!

Re other online newspapers, I presume that they are hoping that extra advertising revenue will offset the loss of subscriptions?
I blame that Labour government. A generation of namby-pamby socialists has grown up expecting something for nothing.
I''m not a namby-pamby socialist. I just won''t pay for something if I can get the same or an equivalent for free. It''s called being sensible.
