I hate the way he tried to hide how awful the first interview with Darren was by showing two different quotes from viewers, one good and one bad, that first interview was the worst I have ever seen, no wonder it was made to be a luaghing stock on youtube and Darren was bang on when he sadi it "was all you" when asked why that youtube video got so many hits.

There is a youtube video of some fat hack named John Sweeney getting totally punked by a guy from Scientology who completely shuts him down and leaves him babbling about tfree speech in England and his right to report on it.  During this, he tells the guy, "You listen to me, it''s time for me to tell you something."  Not really what a supposed  unbiased investigative journalist is supposed to do, making himself the show.

HC - you really should watch the whole of the Panorama programme that clip comes from before judging Sweeney and his outburst.

Please don''t try and make out that the Scientology guy was in the right...he was worse than Sweeney throughout the rest of the show and Sweeney just snapped whilst trying to get a word in edgeways.

The problem with the whole show is that it is edited by BBC so it gives a very slanted view.  The guy interrupts Sweeney when Sweeney is trying to be a smart alec by pointing out the various cameras, but once he indicates a camera by a Scientologist, Sweeney gets shut down hard.  I am sure they could show a similar full story with a very different outcome. 

My point is that Sweeney went into this investigation with an agenda, something the people being "investigated" figured out and didn''t like.  If Sweeney wasn''t a populist hack, he would not have tried to make himself the story.  I''ve seen the vid of him screaming, and it looks very much like a bad act to me.  he keeps watching the camera out of the corner of his eye, making sure it is getting his "outburst" which is in monotone.  Who outbursts in monotone?  Bad actors and hack journalists.

HC - I find it weird that you consider the BBC to present a very ''slanted view'', as opposed to the fair and balanced output of, say, Fox News!

You are judging a whole programme on a very small clip. Sweeney set out to look at Scientology (it''s an investigative show) and they turned up everywhere he went with their own camera crew and disrupted every interview he tried to get - the clip on YouTube is when he lost his rag through frustration (for which he later apologised, admitting it was unprofessional).

I know all about the piece done by Sweeney.  My point is that he had an anti-Sci agenda going in, which is unprofessional, but hacks like him thrive on that sort of cheesy stuff.  He got called on it by Sci and flipped out the way he was hoping to make THEM freak out.

Obviously, BBC is going to try to edit their show to make them look as good as possible.  They would be stupid not to.  Everyone does it.  Even Fox. The point there is that you should not based your opinon on something from one storyteller''s POV.  

I don''t know much about Sci and don''t really care to.  They do have the right to exist without government harrassment in the USA because we have the 1st Amendment which guarentees such things.  There seems to be a cottage industry of Sci haters who want them shut down, but the practices of the organization obviously work for plenty of people who stick with it.  So good for them, and leave ''em alone.
