chazza 0 Posted May 4, 2007 Does anyone else reckon the length of Adam Drury''s contract is far far to long? 4 years is ridiculous, 1-2 years at the most would be plenty for a player who has hardly been inspirational this season. Offering mediocre championship players a contract of that length is financial madness!
Yellow Rages 0 Posted May 4, 2007 This is a good move for the club.Any player you can tie into a long contract then has a value in the transfer market. If he was approaching the end of a contract and either the club of he wanted to part company, you wouldn''t get any money for him. mbncfc 1 Posted May 4, 2007 It is certainly a long contract. I would imagine the wages built into the contract will reflect our Championship income. It will ensure Drury''s wages are manageable, which compared to past signings, has been an issue. No matter how critical you are of him, it would take a fair wedge of money to bring in a natural left back of similar ability, as well as another wedge to bring in some decent competition in that position. Frankly, there are other parts of the defence (let alone team) which need investment.Drury should be at the club, and it is vital we get in some cover/competition for him too (Lappin is not an out-and-out left back). If you''re not trying, I think PG has the ability to make life pretty difficult for you as a player. The contract is long, but as a player they don''t seem to mean that much anymore anyway. It is a different kettle of fish with managers IMO.
Carlos Valderrama 0 Posted May 4, 2007 No one at the club has been inspirational this season, hence the sorry league position. However Drury is a talented left back and probably one of the few saleable assets at the club who could command a decent transfer fee. The long contract protects the club from losing the player either on a free transfer or for peanuts because we would have no bargaining tools to play with. With rumoured interest from Derby in January and the fact that there are very few good left backs about I think that this is an intelligent piece of business by the club. YellowRoad 0 Posted May 4, 2007 Yesss you''re right, and he isn''t getting any better. I think this season was his weakest !He gives his opponent most of the game too much space. His opponent has all the time to get the ball, controle it and give a dangerous cross or shot. He isn''t closing down his opponent enough like other defenders do to our forwards. Andy Hughes is the same and he''s also out of position a lot, maybe not his fault because he''s a midfielder, but PG fault. Please play Colin at right-back, he doesn''t make those silly mistakes and is always close to his opponent, a good reliable right-back !Yes Andy Hughes gives everything in training and in 90 minutes but he isn''t a good right-back, not if you want to do a better than this season. But PG loves Andy Hughes (and Adam Drury) so ........

I suppose he''ll be captain for all that time as well, IF he does sign. It''s not a done deal, remember.
ca 1 Posted May 4, 2007 I don''t think Drury will be captain next year.
The Great Drinkell 51 Posted May 4, 2007 I am afan of Dury''s and accept that this has been probably his poorest season for us, but remember - class is permanent form is temporary. I would have to agree that he is an uninspirational captain and for me this should go to Shackell next year. This would boost his confidence and also show him that the club and manager has faith in him. When Dion''s not in the defence it is shackel who is the organiser and let''s face it Dion isn''t going to play to often next year if he signs is he?I also think this would help Dury recapture his old form. Syteanric 1 Posted May 4, 2007 what a crap decision! he''s already in decline and some of his performances are bloody shambolic! the mans a lightweigt and his positioning is atrocious!4 more years of him on the left! i can see us shipping 100 goals from that side over that 4 years..Drurys Crap! still.. at least it gaurentees a fee for him.jas :)

That is the minimum for us to progress in my book.

Drury will then be allowed to play unhindered by responsibility.
TheMarshmallowMan 0 Posted May 5, 2007 Agreed entirely about leadership qualities. However, as I said in my blog, I think the key to signing Lennon will be to offer him a player-coach role. I don''t think we''ll be offering any such position.
