Penalty Taker

Recommended Posts

Slightly bemused at Grants choices for penalty takers...1 Robinson - not exactly brilliant in front of goal, no idea why he went first2 Thorne - Good Choice3 Shackell - Worst choice, not a goal scorer certainly not one to be taking penaties4 Eagle - Young, inexperienced and very nervous again a poor choice5 Dublin - Experienced Goal Scorer, should have been firstMy Personal Choice would have been1 Dublin2 Thorne3 Etutu4 Croft5 DohertyAnd the report from my sources at the game says that Jarvis is never going to come good for us, time for him to move on and as I suspected we need a replacement for Drury

Its down to who feels confident i guess.

My preferred option:

1. Thorne

2. Doherty

3. Croft

4. Robinson/Etuhu

5. Dublin

Penalty takers in this situation are generally based on whoever feels confident enough to take them.  Didn''t Jamie Carragher take on in the World Cup this year whilst other more obvious choices sat back?  It''s a high pressure environment, and if you don''t feel like you can do that job for the team, then I''d rather you sat back and let someone who did take over... even though it means failure...  If you''ve failed already in your mind, you''re likely to fail in reality.

to be honest it is down the the individuals as much as anything else. Some players you would pressume are going to take a decent penalty but don''t enjoy the high pressure 1 on 1 situation. It is not always the strikers that are the best penalty takers either.

I thought it should have been:

Thorne

Croft

Ethuhu

Drury

Dublin

You have to be upset if any player who has goal

scoring responsibilities within the team doesn''t fancy themselves

from the spot.  Also the captain should be up for taking one.

It says more to me about how pussified seasoned pro''s amidst our team are - Doherty being a prime example.

Anyway - another term & another great money-spinning oppurtunity squandered.

I don''t buy into this whoever was willing takes a penalty. As manager its his job to pick the players and having seen what kind of manager grant is I don''t believe he would have just left it up to the players to decide for themselves.

The whole lot of them are now used to failure and it took guts from the youngsters to step up to the plate. Tough to nominate anyone and volunteeers should be favoured.

So they lost........but one little Carling Cup match hasn''t rained on my parade. The bigger picture is what matters and if we are to have a cup run.......make it the FA Cup!

This is worrying but I''m going to agree with Cluck again [:)] Took guts for the youngsters to volunteer and being knocked out of this cup competition hasn''t dampened my enthusiam one little bit.

To those who have suggested Doherty... are you insane!?

He can''t head the ball from the penalty spot... well, "not into the goal" anyway, however much he might try.

What would be so wrong with the manager saying before kick-off  "This is my chosen order, 1-16, starting with the (perceived) best, finishing with the (perceived) worst? Whichever 11 are on the pitch at the end of 120 minutes, you go in that order. You know what''s expected of you, from the time the final whistle goes you know what you''ve got to do, that''s all you''ve got to concentrate on, no need to waste nervous energy on trying to decide whether you''re up for it or not, just go & do it"

Disagree, coercing someone to take a penalty is the worst thing to do! it increases their chances of missing even more, if they dont want to take it dont make them.. ur sealing ur own fate.

the stronger willed players will take them... Take Croft, a good player and someone who knows where the goal is... but he didnt take a penalty... he probably felt too scared to. theres a psychologicalelement to it.

agreed that the skipper should have one, the last one, ourely because... the captain goes down with his ship!

talking of penalites, i thoroughly reccomend a book called "he always puts it to the right" which is about the History of the Penalty kick, from the 1900''s when players refused to take them due to them being "ghastly, unsportsman like and ungentlemanly!" right up to 2002 and players who will do anything to win one!

Useless fact: the first penalty ever taken was by an Irish Goalkeeper.... he scored.

jas :)
