Shackell Renews Contract

Recommended Posts
Some good news for a change !

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/norwich/5185446.stm

If the club was in the turmoil that people suggest, then players like Shackell would be looking to run down their contracts, rather than signing up for another 2 years, surely ?

Excellent reasoning, blahblahblah.

By the same token, if George Bush was such a bad President of the USA, then surely he wouldn''t have got re-elected...

I quite agree - the way things are portrayed by some people on these boards, and footballers being the way they are, you would have expected there to be a procession of players desperately wanting out of the Club...but instead we have had a steady procession of players signing contract extensions/pro forms (either before last season ended or during this close season), Hucks saying he wants to see out his career here, and those whose contracts weren''t renewed seemingly sad at the news, suggesting they wanted to stay.  None of this suggests the playing side of things at the club is in anywhere near the turmoil that many seem determined it is - in fact, it suggests quite the opposite.

Sadly we haven''t had this followed up by signing any new players yet, and it may now be a case of better late than never, but surely it will happen soon.

Are you suggesting that young Mr Shackell is mis-under-edumacated ?

I can use the same (flawed) argument :

George Bush won that election because Michael Moore told the american public not to vote for him.

Delia and Michael kept Nigel Worthington because fans told them not to keep him.

Am I any more in the right than you ?

Thats funny because the players and management who have left the club recently have not had many positive things to say.

I wonder if they may have had anything to do with the fact that they were being forced to leave the club........?

Good news re Shacks. Of course he is a young player, almost guaranteed a first team spot so why wouldn`t he sign, after all he is hardly going to be a pensioner at the end of his contract is he!!.  If he continues to improve and a big club came knocking that would be the real "acid test" would he stay or would he go, contract or no contract.... Turning to Hucks, he is at the twilight of his career, it is well known that Mrs Huckerby was instruemental in him signing for us after his loan spell, there is a lot to be said regarding domestic bliss......
Great news!!  He has been superb and towards the end of last season was our best defender. Yes [Y]
I think it''s a sign that maybe not all is bad at NCFC, and that there might not be as much "turmoil" around the place as some people think.  What do you think Paul ?

I thought we looked awful in the first half against Cambridge and were lucky to go in at 1-1.  They should have scored again when shackell cleared off the line, the midfield failed to retain possession and we looked toothless (huckerby apart) up front. Fortunatly in the second half Cambridge brought on their reserves and trailists.  It is only a freindly however.

As for turmoil - well the atmosphere after the Ipswich match at Carrow Road says it all - any return of that and we are going nowhere.

Possibly you misunderstand what I mean by turmoil.

There has been some bad-mouthing of the manager from players who have left, and allegedly by people who were friends of Foley.

However, coaches aren''t there to win friends, they are they to keep discipline and train players to win matches.  As Huckerby said "Players always complain when they have to work hard".  And Hunter is making the team work hard in training.

I am happy that Shackell has signed an extension, and see this as a sign that the club are capable of holding on to our best young players.  Had he not signed one, it would have sent one of those horrible signs of foreboding that you seem so keen on talking about.

I am also happy that the club aren''t being "bounced" into buying players for the sake of it, and are looking to buy only if the players in are improvements on those available.

Do you agree that there are some positive signs coming from the club ?

Disagree, players and management leave most clubs all the time and mostly avoid burning bridges.

These are clues to how deeply some people really feel.

None at all, I gather youth will be given more of a go next seaosn - there was ample opportunity last season MISSED, I just hope we don''t end up relying on youth due to our tiny squad.  I see an unbalanced squad and a manager unable to balance it because he kind find a player. I don''t see george burley having the same problem.  I see last years failing team lining up again in August, I see Etuhu playing like Etuhu and Hughes playing like Hughes, I saw our first team of players whom have ''bedded in'' outplayed by  non league Cambridge.

I see a mid table position just below the play-offs and a board and manager content with that position.  Its a situation Wolves found themselves in last season after failing to rectify the problems of the previous season - they have now lost all their star players, have no manager because they missed the boat as Hoddle left so late.

We will see if an ambitious chairman can make a difference when we see where Norwich finish compared to Crystal Palace.  Lets hope we finish above them.... we have failed these last 2 season''s.
