Toto Schillaci RIP

Recommended Posts

Bloody hell. RIP indeed. An overnight sensation at the time. As appearing in every aspiring kid’s playground self-commentary as they endeavoured to dribble and score between the jumpers

In my memory he'd been a journeyman for a while then had a golden period at Italia 90.

The Jeremy Goss of international football,  if you will.

RIP

Didn't he play against us or am I imagining it?

Think he came on as a sub at the Carra game against Inter.

That's correct and during the pre-match warm up Toto (whether it was a personal superstition) always placed a pair of boots on the touchline....He did it at Carra....

RIP Toto....Italia 90 was an absolute blast.....and you Toto were a large part of it....

Very much so.  He came almost out of nowhere -  he didn't have a particularly great club goalscoring record over his career but had a good season in Seria B which carried on following a transfer to Juve in that World Cup year - and six of his seven international goals were scored during Italia 90 - he only scored one more after the tournament.  Surely the fewest International career goals for any World Cup Golden boot winner ?!

Very Goss-like.

I remember that tournament from an English perspective obviously, but I do also remember the sheer joy he got from scoring those goals. He just looked like somebody who couldn't quite believe he was playing on that stage but was certainly going to make the most of it.

There was a great 3 part documentary about Italia 90 on Sky a while ago called something like "Four Weeks that changed the world" (which I can heartily recommend for lots of reasons) that had interviews with him and his father and you could see the pride and the passion that both still felt.

59 is no age at all.  Sad news.

That really is incredible. Makes me think of Mike Gatting, fêted as one of very few England captains to win an Ashes series in Australia, a 2-1 win in 1986-87. They were his only two wins in 23 games as England captain.
