Can a selling club ever establish in the PL

Recommended Posts

NCFC are a selling club, anyone with quality ends up signing for a PL club. Obviously this is good for income but any money that is reinvested is chanced on hopefuls or those no longer good enough for the PL.

SW used most of the Buendia money on several championship level players so the squad depth is improved but you lose quality.

Can a selling club ever establish in the PL?

Well, Brighton were known for selling. Brentford were also known for doing the same. Now look at 'em go

Don’t Brighton owe their owner half a billion quid? And neither are in any way established, they’re simply on the top of an upward curve similar to us, Bolton, Charlton, Swansea, Southampton and many others have experienced down the years. Eventually they’ll have a bad season, poor choice of manager etc and they’ll drop down a division the same as everybody else with somebody else taking their place

True, I guess you have to survive that first season to stand any chance of retaining your quality players and hopefully progress from there. Brighton and Brentford were nothing clubs, now as you say they have established and kicked on

But Brighton have sold well, and bought replacements extremely well.

while we have not. Most of the big money, Emi and Maddison fetched has been wasted. Or simply been used to keep us afloat.

They're both still selling clubs, though.

Heard an interview with Tony Bloom recently and he described the transfer windows as the period when they do their 'player trading'.

I thought it was a good description of what the transfer windows are.

I'm sure you can tell us all a club that does not sell any players. Or a club that is able to block a player from leaving when they want, or doesn't sell when that player's their contract has les than a year to go.

That does include the costs of an entire new stadium, a new training ground, and an £8.5 million pound training facility just for their womens team (bold statement there, betting big on women's football establishing itself, may pay off and may not).

So a large chunk of that is essentially an interest free mortgage.

It’s still money on top of the playing budget though. If we had an owner that could stick an extra 10k seats in the ground out of his own pocket and paid for all our new training and academy facilities we’d have much more to spend on players wages as well

This. There’s only a handful of clubs that aren’t selling clubs. Brighton have just done it a lot better than most in the last few years, but they’ll always be a selling club.
