Dion's Doubling

Recommended Posts

This thread is brought to you from the stairs leading up to the bedrooms.

I wonder how high up Tzolis and Sargent were on our list of targets in forward areas? For me, with a need to hit the ground running, doubling up on players with an existing relationship to a current Norwich player in Dimi -> Tzolis and Rashica -> Sargent makes me wonder if it isn't a deliberate strategy (supported by recruitment data) to help all four of them integrate and foster understanding on the pitch quicker, as Dimi and Milot can both help them settle into the City and advise team mates on what to expect in terms of their tendencies and traits on the pitch?

I know that's most obviously the job of a coach, but it seems too perfect. With pre season a bit disrupted and a really difficult start, this smacks of the kind of marginal gains to help us hit the ground running that Webber champions.

Not saying that we would have signed them just for that reason, but it can't hurt and seems like it could be a clever gambit.

Am I talking absolute sh1t, do you think?

Yes.

Probably not far off the mark. At the very least it would be hard to believe that Webber and Farke didn't ask Rashica and Gianoullis what they genuinely thought of the talents of their team mates.  And it certainly has to be a big advantage that they have played with them previously so know their game well.

I'd say it's a complete coincidence, but as you say, it's something will likely help them all integrate and settle faster (if they sign, of course)

Could also be fuelled by the fact that we have existing transactional relationships with both clubs and there's not much time left to get the business done.

When Dion joined the board at CUFC recently, my mate replied to his tweet saying 'Here's the stairs leading up to the boardrooms', and Dion retweeted it!

I like your 'marginal gains' theory. Not sure how strong Rashica's English is, but presumably both players can speak enough German to be able to explain things to each other and help each other settle in. Obviously Sargent's first language is English, so he won't have any problem.

I was privately wondering - if we sold Cantwell - if we could leverage Rashica to maybe persuade Xherdan Shaqiri to come over....although I can see this causing some trouble in the gym if there aren't enough weights around for Zimbo and Hanley.

Agree with the rough idea though, there's no doubt Giannoulis has been bending an ear as they played not just for PAOK, but also for Greece so already know each other's games well.

As for Rashica's English, if my experience of Kosovan friends growing up in Germany is any guide, he'll be able to speak it well enough.

What about sighting Josh Maja from Bordeaux to compliment Sargent?

I take opposite view that they were probably quite high up the list and as existing relationships can only help. Unfortunately I think this is a reason Villa may want Cantwell
