Bill 1,788 Posted January 13, 2021 I think the impeachment vote at this stage is more symbolic than anything, given how close is it is to the end if his term And I suspect Trumps convictions will eventually be ones more of criminal than political actions. As above, (surfer) I would suggest that the part played in this attempted coup by compliant police and similar others will be of a greater focus during the coming weeks' Meanwhile the round up continues, with this bit of filth hauled in 'Man at Capitol today wearing "Camp Auschwitz" sweatshirt. Yellow Fever 3,810 Posted January 13, 2021 (edited) I worry for our American friends. The Trump diehards are simply that - they will never ever believe that the election wasn't rigged against them as they never witnessed personally the is it 80M Americans who voted for Biden. They are fanatics and Trump shows no signs of disabusing them of their fantasy. Only he can. A significant proportion are heavily armed simpletons, brainwashed zealots and feel however wrongly, cheated and defrauded. Fired up by the RWNJs I fear this will now end in a bloody conflict on a scale totally unimageable in any western democracy. Who or what will stop them - pull them back from the brink if Trump can't say he was simply legally defeated at the ballot? Their festering insurrection must fail, hopefully before it starts, with wiser heads to prevail. Trump and his clique have long sown the seeds of fake news and distrust. Now they and sadly America at large may reap the whirlwind. How do you talk down these 'diehards' ? Edited January 13, 2021 by Yellow Fever

I.e, there can never be consequences for the actions of their supporters because it would be “political” and / or “divisive.” Give me a break. Meanwhile allegations being raised that some of the insurrectionists has been given guided tours of the Capitol building by two Republican members of Congress the day before the attack, and this is why they knew where to go. That’s a serious allegation and I’m sure we will hear more about that over the next few days. This takes this to an even darker place - as it now appears that this was not just a bunch of over excited drunken hillbillies, but an orchestrated attempt at a coup involving persons elected to maintain democracy. There is every thought that should some of these nutters have got through then 'executions' and hostage taking could well have followed. It is no coincidence that those moving quickly through the building carried cable ties, and were subsequently found to be armed. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9142683/Democrat-claims-lawmakers-led-reconnaissance-tours-organizer-boasted-help-congressmen.html

Seems Trumpian though - throw out so much smoke that key issues are obfuscated.

horsefly 4,310 Posted January 13, 2021 (edited) All this shows why it is so important that the Republican Party begins the process of detaching itself from reliance on support from the extreme right. It is clearly in the interest of the future democracy of America that they do so, but also quite obviously in the Party's own self-interest. It seems, at last, that MM and some of his bretheren have begun to realise this after the insurrection ofJan 6 (I think we should start calling it 1/6 to match that other assault on US democracy 9/11). The election showed that however popular Trump may be among such deplorables, they were strongly out-voted by those repulsed by such views. After 1/6 this repulsion will surely increase, and we are likely to see many of those on the fringes tempted by such views thinking twice before they take the path of sedition. The courts too will see quite a culling of the hardcore Trump fascists in the near future and that too should have a deterrent effect. The Republican Party should realise the experiment with Trump has proved a terrible failure, and that it is no mere coincidence that it has ended with an assault on the very foundations of US democracy and the articles of the Constitution. They are now likely to be out of power for two terms and would be well advised to begin immediately a process of difinitive detachment from the anti-democratic forces that Trump and his ilk have courted. Agree with the gist of that. MM knows that the GOP have to wipe the slate clean now - and break with Trump if they are ever to move on. Painful for the GOP but the only way forward. Impeaching (or allowing to be impeached) in a senate trial meets these ends!

Bill 1,788 Posted January 13, 2021 Worryingly it seems to show that the ugly underbelly of the US is still there Assassinations in the sixties seem still to be with us., least the mindset behind them is. Whatever might be put up this is little distant from Mississippi Burning, the Heat of the Night etc And as long as those divisions are kept stoked up, it does not need much fuel to set it ablaze again And for those on here or elsewhere in the county who see no wrong in Trump then I suggest they go talk to Alex Tettey and explain their reasons for that support. This is no fence to sit on in this matter, and there never should be

Surfer 1,547 Posted January 13, 2021 (edited) Listening to the debate in the House today, all I can say is that the Republican speakers are completely detached from reality ... it's all Hillary Clinton's fault, Democrats and Hollywood and the Media were so nasty to Trump he had to ask American Patriots to rise up and protect him.... and the riot last week was understandable and we need to forgive them. Deplorable. BTW - the Representative pointed to as one of the ones showing the soon to be rioters around the Capitol building was none other than - our friend the lady from Colorado who posted that video about packing a gun in D.C. She also apparently was tweeting on Nacy Pelosi's location DURING the riot / attack. And last night she went bat sh!!t crazy that they had installed metal detectors into Congress and when she set them off she then refused to allow the Capitol Police to search her bag. Utterly deplorable. Edited January 13, 2021 by Surfer
horsefly 4,310 Posted January 13, 2021 Some of the Republican speeches are truly shocking in their blatant disregard for truth and democracy. And the sudden commitment to "unifying the country" of those rejecting impeachment is simply laughable. The truth is that there isn't a hope in hell of unifying the country by appeasing Trump and his fascist mob. They have to be made accountable for attacking the Capitol and the democratic principles of the US Constitution.
benchwarmer 625 Posted January 13, 2021 (edited) Impeachment or not, this won't end on 20th January. What we saw at the Capitol was just the tip of the iceberg. In November more than 74 million Americans apparently voted to "Make America Hate Again". No amount of security will protect America's democracy and its leaders if the security forces aren't loyal. They need to drain that swamp, pronto. As things stand, civil war is not completely out of the question. Edited January 13, 2021 by benchwarmer

Bill 1,788 Posted January 13, 2021 As expected some of the Republicans are playing to their core support - a sad reflection on the quality and integrity of so many of those elected in the US Playing to voters who are so dumb they imagine that their third world health care system and their low number of holidays will get worse ............... unless they stop non whites from trying to improve their lot. A society where you can buy and own armoured piercing shells but struggle to get hold of a skin piercing vaccine. Were it not to share the same language and some supposed 'special relationship' it would be seen for what it really is. A country where huge numbers of it's populace are about as worldly-wise as the average North Korean, and share the same subjugation and fetish to a bit of coloured cloth and a song as the enforced mass ceremonies of said NK. A harsh lesson of what constant lying can do to stupid people

Surfer 1,547 Posted January 13, 2021 And the political incentive for many of these Republican representatives in the House is to continue down this extremist path, they can win their seats by not being outflanked in a primary election and gerrymandering their constituency boundaries and suppressing non-white votes. Oh and God, God, God you have to Praise the Lord our God in every speech just in case anyone has forgotten we are a Christian nation.... and preventing a decent into Socialism .... taking away our gun rights .... blah blah blah. benchwarmer 625 Posted January 13, 2021 When Republicans say that impeachment would further divide the nation, what they really mean is that it would further divide the Republican Party. They bear a large share of responsibility for this situation by failing to unite against Trump's refusal to accept the election result.
