The Surman Conundrum

Recommended Posts

Andrew Surman has a very mixed opinion on this message board, I''m firmly in the against category as I just don''t think he contributes enough.

I''d like to talk about his performance last night. He did play very well and looked like a different player to the powder puff neat tidy ineffective Surman were used to.

His goal was excellent and shows what can happen when you bust a gut and reward Moro and Holts hard work down the channels.

My main point and issue with Surman is that last night he raised his game and was unrecognisable from Saturday and every other game for that matter, so the problem I have is why can''t he play like that every game?

Last night he showed desire and commitment and a real passion to win and a willingness to get involved and do all he could to get the 3 points.

Every other game he is mostly anonymous, lightweight, plays within himself and shows no conviction or desire to excel himself.

I think it comes down too 2 things. He''s only just got back in the team, therefore lacking match fitness and match sharpness. Last season for me he was one of our better players. This season he''s been missing the most part so far. Given he''s had a few games now we will soon see the best of him as last night proved. Surman isn''t one of those players that can be missing for months and just slot in, he need a few games under him to get going.

Not so. I am convinced that every Norwich player who goes on the pitch gives absolutely everything. Anything less would not be tolerated. Football, however, is a "funny old game". There are occasions when, however hard you try, nothing seems to come off. On the other hand, things can happen as if my some miraculous force. Who would have predicted AS scoring with a fantastic, diving header? I am more than happy to concur with the view of our Manager - excellent footballer who has a big part to play.

So frustrating, even at times last night.

The number of times the ball broke to him particulary in the second half and he did nothing postitive with it.

I cant remember him once putting a good cross in or attempting to take the full back on.

Considering we have scored 11 headed goals this season, I would have thought crosses into the box from wide would have been encouraged.

Ahh but C.D you despise gifted creative players dont you?! First Hoolahan and now Surman!

Surman is a very good player, The simple fact of the matter is we would not have gone up last year without him. Surman was very positive last night, and his goal proved that, just look at where he starts his run from when Hoolahan gets the ball. For me its a pleasure to watch Fox Surman and Hoolahan knock the ball around - They all seem to bring the best out of each other.

I think Surmans a decent player on the ball but he is one of the most light weight, Pansy, footballers I have ever seen!whether its balance? is he too scrawny? does he need to live on protein shakes? he has the skills but he can blow over in the wind! if he sorted that side of his game out he''d boss the midfield.

from my view last night he did put a few crosses in and at times there was no movement in the box. and he''s not a player to take his man on so stop criticising him for not doing this that are his strengths. it''s like saying why doesn''t crofts dribble and take players on? he was in the same position as surman last night just on the opposite side of the diamond

Isn''t it time we got behind one of our players who put in an excellent shift last night.  No player is perfect, they all have good days and not so good days.  Some of the c**p that has been said about him is just people who don''t like his image.   Either that or they don''t know anything about football.......perhaps its both.  A good performance and goal from him last night now get behind him and the manager and give some encouragement to the team instead of singling out players who actually, on the whole are doing rather well - in case you hadn''t noticed.................

The thing for me is that everyone expected him to come in after not playing a competitive for months and set the world alight. It''s always going to take a few games but we''re not patient enough.

It hard to forget sometimes but footballers are not robots. They are human like you or I. Surman started the game very well by winning a few headers and tackles. From there his game and his confidence seemed to absolute flourish. And that was the big difference tonight for me.

The header was brilliantly taken and he was unlucky nt to win a penalty when he nearly had his head taken off by Zubar. He also played a supreb through ball which Morison couldnt quite take advantage of. Hopefully this will be the start of a good run for him. Because there is a very classy footballer in there

I didn''t think Surman was too bad last night in fairness. He wasn''t outstanding, but he didn''t stand out as not being good enough either.

My opinion is sort of linked to the thread about us not having a real engine house, aggressive ball winner in midfield. When you haven''t got one of those players, you sort of need the other midfielders to all chip in a bit and do a shift defensively and physically. When you''ve got Hoolahan, Fox and Surman in the same 4 man midfield, I think we''re a bit lightweight. But all of those players are, in my view, individually good enough to do the role they can do. They just need the right players around them in order for their frailties to be covered.

Surman had a great first half an hour, then afterwards was good, but nothing special. But I think our team works like that anyway. With Fox, Hoolahan and Surman all being good clever passers of the ball, it means players like Holt, Morison, Tierney, Naughton can do what they do best, and get the right service. I''m quite happy for Fox, Surman and Hoolahan to just play football, not doing anything special but passing the ball to the right players in the right areas, and I think that happens quite a lot. Some of our attacks last night were very good examples of passing/counter attacking football, and if you take Surman out of the team, I think we have to resort to a lot more ''long'' balls to Morison, which also work very well, which is why we are seeing a lot more balls over the top this season. Holt, and even Jackson don''t react as well to long balls like Morison.

But I think Surman definatly fits in well, I don''t think he will ever shine in the premiership, but he will get on with his job effectively, and obviously has the ability to shine like he did in the first half hour yesterday.

Well I thought Surman was superb last night.  He got really stuck in, he didn''t chicken out like he usually does, he linked the play well, he scored a fantastic header and a lot of our positive play involved him.  However one thing I will say is that when he gets the ball on the left in acres of space he doesn''t drive into the space, he instead stops and passes sideways where instead he should be exploiting the space.

This is his best performance in a Norwich shirt so far but I put that down to being back at his old club.  They didn''t really give him a chance at Wolves and I think you could see he had that determination about him to show them what they''re missing.

If he plays like this every week then we''ve got a good player on our hands but we''ll have to wait and see if he can raise his game like that more than a couple of times a season.

Surman was my MOTM last night. I felt he put in the best performance, and ran his socks off.

He didn''t give up and his header was brilliant. He also got stuck in and wasn''t afraid to a foot in when needed. I would love to see him start alongside Johnson in midfield against Spurs. Definitely deserves it!!

Surman is a quality, intelligent footballer. Problem with a lot of fans is that they wouldn''t recognise one in a million years, simply because they don''t understand the game. Thankfully Lambo does - hence Surman is in the team.
