Norwich vs Watford - Match Ratings

Recommended Posts

Ruddy - 4 - Beaten at his near post for the first goal isn''t a good look, however the ball was hit with such ferocity I doubt he had much of a chance. Now I don''t wish to bleat about Forster, but Watfords second goal was one we have seen Forster save time and time again last season. Flapped at a low cross which nearly cost us, and didn''t have a chance for the 3rd. Shaky.

R. Martin - 6 - Looked confident going forward, a nice turn of pace which we haven''t seen enough of. Would have gotten a 7 had he not have played a major role in the flaptastic 3rd goal.

Nelson - 6 - Good finish to his goal. Not too sure how well he will get on alongside Ward.

Ward - 5 - Not a great debut by any stretch of the imagination. Summed up with a seal-like clearence which nearly led to a Watford goal. Also turned away from the 3rd goal - never looks smart.

Drury - 6.5 - Decent enough, didn''t do anything wrong. Again linked well with Surman and Hoolahan.

Fox - 6.5 - Looked like a solid replacement for Clingan. Does not pull out of a challenge, and provided a good range of crossfield passing.

Crofts - 7.5 - Great finish, good distrbution, good awareness, great tackling. A hard worker and looks like he could be a new fans favourite.

Surman - 6.5 - Glad we have him in the side, I believe he will provide an alternative attacking source along with Hoolahan. Solid if unspectacular.

Hoolahan - 6.5 - Some great control and turning on the ball, but then takes too many touches and loses it. Frustratingly has a habit of over-hitting a throughball, but he scared the defence as they were backing off him.

C. Martin - 6 - Wasn''t helped with the amount of high balls coming to him from the back, so pulled wide to find the ball at his feet. Did not get a shooting chance other than the early FK''S.

Jackson - 6 - Same story as C.Martin. Defence seemed to think he was 6ft tall and sent everything high to him. Nice backheel to set up our 1st goal.

Holt - 6 - One half-decent chance went wide, we know enough about Holt to recognise he adds an aerial presence we need. Will be suprised if he doesn''t start.

Positives: New midfielders looked sharp and attentitive. They all linked well with Hoolahan.

Negatives: Home defeat against one of the ''weaker'' teams. Ruddy looked rocky, as did his defence. Attackers could not get into the game.

I actually think you''re being kind on Surman to rate him the same as Fox and Hoolahan.

For me that was a disappointing performance from Surman. Just didn''t do enough, no urgency, a weak performance.

You would have to say, based on that performance, Simon Lappin was unlucky to be out of the team because he would have put more into the game.

Possibly disappointing for the standards people are expecting of him, but i did not think he put in a bad performance. He had a good FK well saved, played some nice passes and did not give the ball away. When he gets the ball he excites me more than anyone else other than Hoolahan, I would say at this time.

Glad you could see it as well, he didn''t put enough into the game. It''s alright making a few nice little passes when the ball comes to you and taking the odd freekick but he didn''t do enough throughout the game when he did and didn''t have the ball.

I''m sure he will do better though.
I agree with you GJP, re Surman. For a player who has been hyped among us fans as much as he has, he really didn''t set the game alight hey? He can pick a peach of an intricate pass when he has a player bursting into the box in front of him, but i didn''t see any beautiful crosses or a single tackle!Lappin would try and whip the ball in a lot more often and would also provide a hell of a lot more competitiveness in our midfield. Still, I don''t see him breaking into the side that often this season.
He didn''t seem to get into the game at all. I thought Crofts and Fox were at it from the word go, although Fox''s performance drifted in and out. Thought Crofts was the stand out player of the evening, and can really see him becoming a fans favourite.

Don''t think anyone with the exception of Crofts deserved any more than a 5 tonight, Russell Martin and Ward were a 3 at best with the rest of em 4 or 5. Can''t believe we had so little fire in our bellys as it was the first game of a new season, very disappointing but not going to go overboard on the strength of one performance. Needless to say we''ll have to get much better if we are to compete in this league.

Agree with these scores, I think. Arguably Ward was a 3 and Ruddy a 4, but it would be like changing deckchairs on the Titanic.

Still pretty disappointed after being there last night - here are my ratings

Ruddy  5 - defence exposed him too much dropped a few crosses, should be ok

R.Martin 5 - exposed to many times but not as bad as the CBs

Nelson 4 - Poor and clearly couldnt link up with his partner - did well to get a goal though

Ward 2  -a real shocker - clearly not match fit and positioning and reading of game awful - would like to see him replaced Tues with Askou

Drury 5 - steady but exposed too much

Fox 6 - showed signs of potential good distribution skills but concerned not strong enough to be the anchor

Crofts - 7 Looked good and he will prove to be a useful buy

Hoolihan 7 When he got the ball Watford came under pressure - tried to do a bit too much sometimes

Surman 5 - disappointing after the build up - didnt show up enough in the game

C. Martin 6- tried hard but didnt get the service

Jackson  5 - seemed to small and light weight for this league - hope I am proved wrong and he can link up with a fit again Holt.

They have a long battle ahead and if we can finish mid table it will be a good result.
