was promotion the worst thing to have happened to the club?

Recommended Posts

Previous to Promotion (and possibly the playoffs) we had got used to mid table finishes, smaller attendances and average players....

Promotion changed all that, we were seeing the best players in the world every week, we wanted to stay up of course, so that we could enjoy moments like Man utd at home over and over again.

However, was promotion the beginning of the cycle that saw us end up where we are now?

Nigel Worthington was an excellent manager up to that point, who commanded respect from players and supporters alike, His mishandling of the Malky Mackay situation, replacing him with Simon charlton and then signing the Doc as a striker showed that perhaps he was out of his depth at that level.

The board had managed to get by on the "prudence with ambition" mantra for a while, we hadn''t even had a sniff of any type of success for years so the mantra worked...until we went up.

It became apparent to everyone pretty quickly that it was going to take money to keep us in the division.. the club splashed out on Dean ashton, too late imo, but other areas desperately needed strengthening.. the board were sticking to the tried and tested, which had taken us up in the first place, to their credit it nearly paid off... but the lack of quality due to a lack of spending cost us.

Since relegation the fans have been hungry for a return to the premiership.. the boards reluctance to dip into the transfer market, instead choosing to secure off the field assets which is claimed will be for the benefit of the club in time has led us to a poor side with no money for team strengthening.

did we punch above or weight for 2 seasons under Worthy? Have we reached the level we were always at? can we expect to be, at best, a mid table championship side....Promotion showed us how the other half lived.. it also started a chain of events which have led us to where we are today.. a mere shadow of the club we once were..The game has passed the club by... "prudence with ambition" is no longer going to get us success... i dont know what the solution is, short of investment.... but we HAVe to learn from the mistakes..

Did they show that he was out of depth at that level?

I can agree with you on Malky, as I was one of the first to have a letter printed in the EDP on the subject (and it was probably the biggest article from a fan on the subject to... taking up most of the page if I remember rightly).

The cash that Worthy was given in order to keep us up at the beginning of our Premiership campaign was nothing short of an insult though.

Solution is having owners and fans who put football first.

Never before have I seen a football clubs fans protect it''s underperforming owners by fawning over accounts books (something which in hindsight was a foolish move as despite crookin the books massive holes in the sheeps denial have been pointed out here for years now too).

i have said the same thing on another thread...i think going up has killed our club. A season mixing with the big boys has nearly cripled us...the same thing is happening at palace and southampton we all came down at the same time and we''re all CRAP! The gap now is even wider.....I wish all the luck in the world to hull and stoke, don''t screw up your chance like we did

The ONLY thing that will stange anything is a major takeover....and the fact that we turned one down in the summer NEEDS to be accounted for!

Delia where are you! thanks but no thanks... the odd two million here and there just isn''t enough in todays game, we need so much more.

i just want to add that i think the problem runs ALOT deeper than us getting rid of roeder...if he goes we''ll have exactly the same problem with someone else

It''s the way we went about our business after we were promoted......That the rot, really set in.

Total mismanagement, no accountability, unacceptable naivety, the board were totally out of their depth - both in the football and the business financial dealings, the manager and his lack of foresight on real requirements concerning the squad.....and a negative attitude before the Prem season had even started and that ''Prudence with Ambition'' that is leading us to Perdition......Any other performance by a board of Directionless in any other business or company - and heads would have rolled.....But, ''Yip yippee'' they''re still there, and only Bazzer Skipper standing aside to be replaced by the ''Turner-around Two'' who have recently said "Toodle Hoo".....

Hah! And the culpable board and the most astute CE - had supposedly prepared and catered for our immediate after one-season in the Prem relegation.....Then, the Parachute payments pi$$ed away on gawd knows what.....and.....and...."WELL, HERE WE ARE!"....[8-|]

But, I personally blame us, the fans.....It''s all our fault.......Because we accepted it, and you get what you accept......which is why - we are were we are.....and no immediate signs of a life-line or recovery.

Some interesting points have been made in this thread, though I feel we were very unlucky in that Premiership season, we had a massive injury crisis for a while, worse than any other club in the premiership, I remember Liverpool at home, we had Danny Crowe and Ryan Jarvis up front for us, we also had Safri out for ages, as well as many others. Once we had a fully fit squad, our home form came on leaps and bounds and we so nearly did enough to stay up, and I believe that if we didn''t have that injury crisis then we would have stayed up, no doubt about it. We should have spent more money, I agree with that, but regarding the Ashton matter, thats talking with hindsight, the only reason we signed Ashton is because he''d scored a ridiculous amount of goals for Crewe at the start of the season, the previous 2 seasons he was no way near as prolific as he was that year, and he was being overshadowed by Rob Hulse I think it was, who then went and signed for WBA. What if we had spent £10 million more than what we did, and then still got relegated, where would we be now? Its all if''s and but''s but what has happened, has happened. The biggest downfall that has happened to Norwich (In my opinion) is that when we got relegated, the fans expectations rocketed, and after a few bad results there was a lot of grumbling and hostility towards our board and manager, and that bad feeling has carried on ever since, and that is why we are where we are.
