CaptnCanary 0 Posted July 7, 2008 OK so do male pigs have like 8 nipples or something???
Evil Monkey 52 Posted July 7, 2008 Its because all embryos at initial development stage are inherently"female" until the Y chromosone is added to the mix, as it were. There is no evolutionary reason for males to have nipples, but thenthere is also no reason for male mammals not to havenipples. There is no disadvantage in males having them, so thereis no reason for them to have been "phased out" of males throughnatural selection. For males not to have nipples, the embryodevelopment process would have to be changed and there is noevolutionary reason for this to have happened. (or something like that)Or, if you''re a creationist: "because God said so."So there. [:)]

Evil Monkey 52 Posted July 7, 2008 Ooh, if we''re getting points for scientific accuracy, the male nipplecan be considered a "vestigal" organ, ie a former function or featurethat is now redundant. They are not used for regulating body temperature or picking up Jazz FM...
