Further proof the release clause continues to plague all clubs in the Championship

...as Jonathon Walters leaves Ipswich for Stoke for £1.8mil.

Do you think anyone else has a release clause like this at our club? Seems to me if people like Walters - a relative unknown when he moved to Ipswich - is demanding clauses like this, then they''re relatively standard.

Yes, I think it is becoming almost standard on contracts. The release clause allows the player to dictate when he leaves and allows him to negotiate a hefty signing-on fee.

Further evidence of the shifting of power and money from the clubs to the players.

Of course he is but, as much as it pains me to admit it, he IS a very good player who I would think is worth more than £1.8m.

I will just LOL if it''s true [:D]

Nothing on Sky or BBC yet, tbh I''d be surprised if they let him go, he''s their star player.

Docherty has a release clause of £200. It amazes me that he is still here.

he did have a good season, not a great one and he hasn''t really done much apart from that, he''s played at lower levels and was signed for a pittance (I not certain, somebody could confirm) so selling him for £1.8 million isn''t bad business. But buying a player on one season, we all know what can happen to one season wonders.

There are a fact of life now. Some we have won with notably Hoolahan and I believe Lappin was signed that way too and some you maybe lose on although I still think £3.5M for Earnie and £1.5M for Etuhu isn''t bad business - Derby have soled Earnie for almost a £1M less and is Etuhu worth anymore than £1.5M? For most of his time here he was derided as a lazy so and so. As long as the clauses are set at a reasonable level then I would rather have the players here even if only for a season.

[/quote]Actually I heard it first on Wrath of the Barclay - and had it quickly confirmed by Teamtalk.com, one of the internet''s biggest football sites.http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,1805_3794323,00.html
