Unlucky Fried Kitten 0 Posted April 21, 2008 I''m sure most of you are aware by now, that the EDP prints a selection of posts from this message board in its match coverage on Monday mornings. How many of you have had the privilege of seeing your thoughts in print up to now? I have, just the once, and they published an unexpurgated version of what I wrote - I was lucky.Reading through some of the published message board quotes this morning, I decided to check whether they had all been printed verbatim. I was a little bit surprised to find some of the posts had been edited and tidied up a bit - including correction of spelling mistakes. Still, I believe newspapers reserve the right to alter any material that they publish, and so long as it doesn''t change the gist of what the writer is trying to say it doesn''t matter, I suppose. Double bubble for you.
WeAreYellows49 0 Posted April 21, 2008 Just a question, do they not have to ask permission before printing any comments we make?
Unlucky Fried Kitten 0 Posted April 22, 2008
Just a question, do they not have to ask permission before printing any comments we make?
I believe I''m correct in saying that you can not claim copyright over any material you post on the internet. Your "work" is already in the public domain as soon as it appears on an online message board or forum etc. The moderators should be able to confirm this, or maybe there is some info hidden somewhere on this website which would explain your rights. NCFC_Thain 0 Posted April 22, 2008 I actually run a message board/forum (mainly for people who went to my old school) and the admin on it (me and a couple of friends) reserve the right to publish any content of the forum, you agree to it when you sign up. Anything you post, in most cases, belongs to the forum/message board owner.

So If I put a copyright next to all I post, would that count legally as mine? [;)][:D]
Web Team - Vince 0 Posted April 22, 2008
Just a question, do they not have to ask permission before printing any comments we make?
You have already licensed Archant to do it...When you join the message board / use our sites, you accept the terms of use:http://new.pinkun.com/terms.aspx
ContributionsWe are delighted to receive your contributions to our bulletin boards, chat rooms and the like but only on the basis that: * you accept that they may be monitored; * you accept that we may exercise editorial control over them and may decide not to allow publication at our absolute discretion; * you warrant to us that all such contributions are lawful and not obscene, offensive, defamatory or infringe any rights of any third party and that you will indemnify us in respect of any breach of that warranty; * you warrant to all us that all content that you submit will be accurate, truthful and not misleading in any way; * you licence us and all Group Companies to use the information you provide on any medium and you waive your moral rights in respect of it.
I was trying to work out where moral rights fall the other day, and I''m still not decided - if we were to introduce a feature where you could print your favourite posts onto a T-shirt, or we sold a book ("Best of the Pink ''Un Message Board 2007-2008 Season") you presumably wouldn''t have any claim on all the millions we''d make. Or would they be commercial rights? Would you be able to claim it wasn''t a reasonable expectation of use?Common sense says to me if you place something in the public domain, i.e. publish something on a message board that anyone can access, you should expect to be quoted by anyone, whether that be other message board users, the BBC, bloggers, national newspapers, the EDP sports desk (I bet they won''t quote this) or even <gulp> the Green ''Un. For some of these, whether they''re licensed to do it doesn''t come into it, they just cut and paste because it''s so easy to do (going off topic, but if you''re a film company, and you take popular movies out of the cinemas and put them easily into the hands of the people through DVDs, the people will quote them with their disc burners and on torrent networks....) Web Team - Vince 0 Posted April 22, 2008
including correction of spelling mistakes.
If the subs didn''t do that, some readers would complain about the amount of spelling mistakes on just one page; how we were undoing all the good work by teachers; and/or how we were accepting txtspeak thus encouraging gang culture, etc.
