BroadstairsR 2,273 Posted May 20, 2023 (edited) Let's have a small diversion discussing matters related to the resurgence of Ipswich Town Football Club rather than squabbling about the rights or wrongs of Webber's ephemeral utterings or tearing our hair out with concerns about our own club's current demise. I know some feel that the binners should be off-menu on this NCFC forum and have no interest in "them," but others, me included, enjoy the rivalry. They are currently getting quite worked up about losing their young superstar manager to a bigger club, with Palace being the latest reported to be interested in poaching him. We should, of course sympathise because from Saunders, through to Bond, Walker and Lambert we have lost a succession of good managers to bigger boys. I find it amusing as being premature in the extreme, but just love to see them get panicky. McKenna has got them promoted from L.1 with a squad that cost nearly as much as the rest of the league collectively and would need a successful season in the Chumps to even excite the interest of others, imo. I haven't been to TWTD lately mainly because they are flying high at the moment. I prefer indulging in schadenfreude when they are doing badly. This post caught my eye when I saw the Palace interest in the papers and visited: " ...... We are way bigger than Palace - rich history and now the ownership to leverage that history and rebuild the club, we will wave at Palace on the way past.McKenna will leave us one day, but it will either be for one of the big 5 or for the England job." Jesus H. We know that a day never passes by on there without some mention being made of that illustrious history of theirs but "way bigger than Palace" on the basis that their club has won two trophies since the days of black and white television? They have done little else for the best part of forty odd years now after all. I like CPFC, it is the away ground I have visited most and know some of the fans and the area well. For a start, the club has a catchment area of Croydon, Bromley, Lewisham etc, an area populated by over a million. Like us, they have been yo-yoing a lot but have enjoyed 14 Premier League seasons and more than City and like us, they are a middle-sized outfit whilst the binners seem to see themselves in a higher bracket. Way, way 'smaller' than that little club in deepest Suffolk? Doubt it. Small town syndrome again? Actually, it's Kieran McKenna, not that anybody would know. Branston Pickle 4,145 Posted May 20, 2023 (edited) The fact is that there are a large number of sides of “similar” sized sides in terms of support and so on, probably 50-60% of us, and that includes us, Palace, Binners, Saints. What has started to separate some is the huge cash in the PL, but we do still see that it goes in cycles. Edit It is ridiculous to harp on about history in any other than a nostalgia front - things are wholly different now; Huddersfield won three league titles on the trot in the 1920s and were runners up 3 times (one of those in the 30s). It’s as relevant or irrelevant as the binner success 50 years later, or 40 years ago. Edited May 20, 2023 by Branston Pickle
cambridgeshire canary 7,797 Posted May 20, 2023 (edited) I know the binners have always been a bit deluded going on about how "massive" they are and how they seem to still think it's the 1970's and that they are some kind of common household name of a club but blimey. They outspend every other club in the divison after having spent almost five years in the third divison only to not even be able to finish first and now they think their manager will soon leave them to manage a champions league club or England? Jesus wept indeed. Edited May 20, 2023 by cambridgeshire canary
Danke bitte 1,154 Posted May 20, 2023 I have this irrational hatred of Ipswich. It makes next to no sense at all. So I hope McKenna leaves to go to a “bigger” club and they fall back to L1 where they belong. They’ll have two cup finals this season which will be the two derbies with us. And if they win either that’ll add another 20 years of cultured history to their illustrious past. Get fkd Ipswich Town

According to the Mail Online, Palace are supposed to be in talks with Hodgson unfortunately.

Mention of Huddersfield actually reminds me of the time when they got promoted to the Premier League with Wagner and I remember a binner being annoyed at that on the basis that his club had a "more illustrious history." Some supporters get criticised for viewing the formation of the Premiership/Premier League as being the 'beginning of football.' The binners go one better seeing football beginning in 1972 and ending in 1982.

Does make me wonder though.. if Leicester get relegated and don't bounce back up do you think that 50 years from now you'll have a bunch of 20 to 30 year old Leicester fans who have only ever seen their club play in league one and the championship spending all their time harping on about how massive of a club they are as they won trophies in the past? BroadstairsR 2,273 Posted May 20, 2023 Another gem from TWTD: "My guess is he’s only going to a club that is ‘bigger’ than Ipswich… and that is less clubs that you realise… for example palace, Leicester, wolves, Brighton, wouldn’t come close." Jesus H. Unbelievable. They really only dwell in their own little world.
