Wimbledoncanary 37 Posted August 8, 2014 Remember this ? http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/sunderland-field-ineligible-player-relegation-threatened-side-will-not-face-points-deduction-for-playing-ji-dongwon-9236870.html . Sunderland fielded him for 4 games and a got small fine. Legia Walsaw do it and they automatically forfeit their game against Celtic 3-0. Apply the Legia Walsaw decision and Sunderland would have been deducted 12 points and been relegated. FIFA & UEFA need to come up with clearer guidelines . Bring on the championship. Feedthewolf 5,885 Posted August 8, 2014 Legia Warsaw played a player who was suspended due to a red card. That''s an automatic match forfeit by UEFA guidelines, they had no ''wriggle room'' on this one.
ZLF 335 Posted August 8, 2014 had just that conversation; the punishment did not cover the offence for sunderland yet for legia W a sub appearnance for 6 minutes influenced a 6-1 aggregate result with a 5-0 turnaround. Thats a deterrent. Not sure that Sunderland would have been deducted 12 points - didnt they only gain 1 with him; but an example was needed and the over powerful PL made themselves look duplicitous and corrupt by brushing the small fine under the carpet. Bethnal Yellow and Green 2,424 Posted August 8, 2014 Very different situations, different competitions and different rules. Premier League acting within their own rules on the situation. Ji was never suspended, just wasn''t re-registered after coming back from international loan. The error was in paperwork, and there is no way that Poyet could have known Ji wasn''t available. Henning Berg should have known his player was suspended, as he was sent off whilst playing for Legia.
Syteanric 1 Posted August 8, 2014 Barcelona could field 11 ineligible players.. they''d get find £35....

From the Legia perspective it was just a paperwork error. The player was suspended for 3 matches, they had already played three european matches before this one, however, they hadn''t registered the player in their squad for the first two of these, if they had done then the suspension would have been served which is what they believed had happened..... Having said all of that, the competition and rules areguement hold more sway. Add to that a different governing body as well with UEFA wanting to make examples of people and appear strong (as long as it isn''t a big club) and the PL not wanting to set any dangerous precedents and you can totally understand (though not agree with) the differing punishment... FCC 94 Posted August 9, 2014 Does that mean if Legia won the first leg 4 - 0, the could have him on, lost 3 - 0 and gone through anyway? No team can therefore afford to lose a first leg 4 - 0.
Unhinged Canary 375 Posted August 9, 2014 Yep. They missed 2 penalties in the first leg too. If they''d have scored either of them they would still be in the Champions league.Fine margins.....
