Can we really give Lambert credit for the substitutions today??.......

Recommended Posts

because as I saw it most of them were purely to rectify the mysfiying team selecetion that we started with?!?.

How can it possibly be that we start with two strikers against Tottenham ,yet when a team come to Carrow Road who have won 4 out of their last 46 away from home we would then revert to one striker?. I''d imagine Jol,Hangeland and Senderos couldnt believe their luck when they saw our teamsheet.

I''m just thankful that we were still in the game when Holt came on to help rescue us.

Play a lone striker away if we want or when playing a top side at home but we simply must give the mid-lower sides more to think about when playing them at home.

Yes of course we can give him credit for the substitutions. You only have to think back to the days of Worthington, Roeder and Grant to remember subs being brought on with us behind and only a few minutes left. Paul Lambert saw it needed changing today and brought Holt on at half time and also brought Jackson and Bennett on with enough time for them to affect the outcome. The amazing regularity with which Lambert''s subs score is a testament to how well he understands this part of the managers role.

I think Lambert likes to keep the opposition guessing by switching formations and line ups regularly. It stops us being unpredictable and too reliant on one way of playing.

He clearly wanted to use Holt as an impact today ... and it worked.
my point however today is, that Holt shouldn''t have been on the bench to start with.
I agree and disagree. We shouldn''t be playing 4-5-1 at home to fulham imo and morison upfront with holt makes no sense with the lack of width with the diamond. However, you have to give him credit, first for being more attacking (going to the diamond) and then putting Jackson on with holt in the diamond which works well as we all saw last season

for me our best 2 teams (so far this season) are:

                           ruddy

de laet/naughton  martin  whitbread  tierney

bennett         fox       johnson    pilkington

                morison  holt

or

                        ruddy

naughton    martin  whitbread    tierney

                         fox

   crofts                                pilks/surman

                   hoolahan

       jackson             holt

A 5 man midfield could have worked today, and justified the dropping of holt to the bench, but I really struggle with the 5 players he chose for the midfield.

The middle was unbalanced without pace of real structure to suit the players. For me only two of surman, johnson & Fox should have started (BJ the weak link of the three) with Pilkington left flank and Bennett right. That would have given us width, balance and some pace to get around morison, which did not happen with the chosen 5.

Starting a lone striker is fine - just needs the right mix. A Matt Phillips signing would help.
I think Lambert had an eye on the QPR game with the selections today and substitutions.
Definately, 3 games in 6 days with our squad, not an easy one, I think we should be happy with a point today and hope for the win on Monday.

Definitely thinking about QPR. We now have a fresh Holt and Jackson who I feel certain will start tomorrow, probably with Bennett too in a straight 4-4-2, matching up Colin''s Park Rangers.

I think the way Fulham''s midfield played yesterday would have given us problems whatever formation we played. They are a decent side, just need some strikers. Think they will have a strong second half of the season.
