Barclay hero 0 Posted May 24, 2011 The boards are (understandably) full of players people want to see in yellow and green next year. However what people seem to have ignored is the fact that we can only have 25 players in our 1st team squad (although no limit to the numbers in the reserves or out on loan). Any changes can also only be made in the transfer window - so whoever is picked has to go through to January With this in mind who would you have in your squad. Remember that you have around 40m to spend - on transfer fees, agents, wages, etc - plus whatever you gain from a clear out. What balance would you have? We couldnt realistically have 12 forwards - as you need to balance the team elsewhere. An extra man in defence potentially means one less in midfieldBased on the 2 people for every position, an ideal squad would give you 2 keepers, 8 defenders, 8 midfielders and 4 strikers - giving you 3 spaces to have extrasIf you were Lambert - who would you release/sell, who would you buy and who would you keep? CRAZY LEGS 0 Posted May 24, 2011 chris martin will not go anywhere unless its a loan , he scored 23 in lge 1 and is only 22 wouldn''t make sense, but apart from cody don''t think there is a player in that list we would actually get money for maybe 100k for wilbs
Morisons Prozac 0 Posted May 24, 2011 Well Holt, R Martin, Crofts, Fox, Ward, Whitbread, Barnett, Tierney, Ruddy, Jackson, Hoolahan, Surman are all pretty much guaranteed places in the squad.Others who possibly will: Drury, Rudd, Lappin, McNamee, C Martin, SmithIf all of these are involved and I don''t think they will be then we have at least seven places to fill. Also aren''t we allowed unlimited academy players so the likes of Ball, Adeyemi, Francomb and Steer would be involved but not in the 25? Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man 4,615 Posted May 24, 2011 I made a post about this a few weeks back. It isn''t something we need to worry ourselves about.
Last summer, there was a lot of fuss made of this, but no club, even Man City, were affected by it. So we obviously don''t have a problem. The only two high profile players to not make their squads were Jonathan Woodgate at Spurs and Michael Kightly of Wolves, and that was only because their clubs didn''t bother to register them because they were injured and couldn''t play before the registration window re-opened in January.Although the rule states there must be a minimum of eight home grown players in a 25-man, in reality, the way it works is that it is a maximum of 17 overseas players. If you are unable to name eight home grown players, you don''t have to, as long as there is enough free spaces in the squad, so a blank space in the squad is worth a home-grown player. The vast majority of clubs last summer didn''t name anywhere near 25 players, because under-21 players don''t count, and they only had around 20 players over the age of 21, and a lot of those were English-trained. Obviously they didn''t bother registering under-21 players.
ryan1992 0 Posted May 24, 2011 The good thing about the 25 man rule, is any player below 21 doesn''t have to be registered, so players like Korey, Adeyami etc could play a few times for us without having to leave somebody out of the registered list.
Barclay hero 0 Posted May 24, 2011 Fair point CNo1F - but Im not sure that they will have a major part to play, and Im looking more at peoples idea of squad balance - rather than just adding names. Signing 4 new strikers would possibly spell the end of Holt and/or Jackson for example
bjg123 0 Posted May 24, 2011 Under 21s don''t need to be registered. Smith and Rudd won''t cost us a place. I''d imagine the 25 will be:Ruddy, Martin, Drury, Whitbread, Crofts, Holt, Jackson, Surman, Hoolahan, Fox, Barnett, Ward, Tierney.Probably also Lappin and Chris Martin.I''ve left out Gill, Hughes, Wilby, Johnson, McNamee, McDonald, Jones, Smith and Askou.Leaves us about 9-12 spaces! Over to you
It hasn''t been ignored, think there have been 3 or 4 threads about squad size already. Players under the age of 21 aren''t counted towards the 25 and no Premier League team (apart from Blackpool who didn''t register Jason Euell) had to leave players, who weren''t on long term injuries, out due to the 25 man rule last year. I don''t think the ruling with have much affect on Norwich as we already have a pretty small squad and few players who are stuck here on long term deals. The releases are clear; Askou and Gill (the only players with contracts finishing this summer), can''t see other players being released as you will still have to cover their wages, if you are going to pay them might as well have them around just in case. Hughes, S. Smith and OTJ will all be allowed to leave for nominal fees. Cody and Johnson will be allowed to leave if a decent offer comes in for them, and I can see the same happening with Adeyemi and Chris Martin. I think Lambert will add at least 3 midfielders to the squad, as well as one more centre back a right back and probably a left back as well (maybe a player who can cover several of these positions). In attack would imagine another striker or two as well as a creative "Hoolahan" style midfielder who can also play on the wing.
Mahogany 0 Posted May 24, 2011 I think Wilbraham will probably be in the 25, doubt Lambert would have signed him if he didn''t think he could contribute if we went up, as when we signed him things were already looking promising. Also doubt he would have signed if he expected to be let go if we made it, its not as if he was rotting on the bench at a club going nowhere before he joined us.Selling C.Martin may make sense if we can get a good price for him. He''s still young and will improve which makes him an attractive proposition for any team with a bit of cash looking to build a squad over the next few years. If we could get say 1.5-2m (plus the savings on his wages) for him mightn''t that be more useful to us than a reasonably good striker with a fair amount of promise and unfortunately well established ''issues''?
