Recommended Posts

it seems that we get a lot of propaganda from the club saying what a wonderful tour it has been, but please just read this article from a malaysian paper

[link]http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2004/7/18/sports/8467535&sec=sports[/link]

now i do not necessarily side with them but it is interesting to see all the same. can anyone in malaysia shed some light on this??

Good post Archie. if the lads ever needed insperation they should print tthe article and hang it in the dressing room.

Mind you, I would''nt believe the bloody date if its printed in the star. Surely they''re more noted for pictures of naked women, then sport, or so I''m told!.

I refuse to believe we are not on a par with ManU and Chelsea, so it must be rubbbish.

That press report compares Norwich unfavourably with Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd. So what? Not exactly earth shattering news is it.

But it''s always hard judge the oncoming season by performances in pre-season friendlies. We got stuffed by Spurs last summer at Carrow Rd after all. Would anyone have predicted the season that followed based on that result?

Any credibility that press report has disappears once you read that they also consider Birmingham as a team that plays "exciting football".

I also posted this link (see thread ''Malaysia Tour'') and was ticked off for being negative (though to be fair I was merely reporting a report!) by someone who was actually over there. They pointed out that the heat and humidity sapped our boys'' strength. This is obviously a fair point. Though it''s interesting that this apparently wasn''t seen as a major factor when Man U, Bimingham and the others have been there in the past.

I don''t want to criticise the team needlessly (before the season even begins!) and I won''t do so, but perhaps the Malaysian Star article''s actually a realistic reflection of our comparative standard, that is without Hucks or the promised new signings. It''s usually very difficult to gauge this from the EDP in particular because before EVERY season they raise false hopes by wildly exaggerating our chances, which is similar to what the national press and TV do with England. Everyone not ''in the know'' is always so much more disappointed as a result. However, can''t knock the coverage for being over the top when we are successful, like last season. In those cirumstances you can''t get enough of the hype, the pictures, the commentary, the popularity of the club etc. It was great!

Must admit when you read reports like that it then makes you wonder whether we have got what it takes to sustain the Premiership. On the one hand you read reports from our local press saying how well we played which gives you confidence and then you read something like this which probably is more realistic as it is not locally biased and it brings you right back to earth. I still firmly believe that Norwich need at least another 3 signings if not I fear that we will struggle immensely in the Premier league. It is purley natural for supporters of any team to say we will stay up but when the action gets under way I fear class will tell of which I am sorry to say I do not think we have in abundance. It is not enough to say that hard work, graft and team spirit will keep us up. This is a high quality league we are talking about and team spirit will soon disappear if we are bottom of the league. It is not enough to rely on Hux (whom for me still has to prove himself in the Premier League) and Malky in defence I am sorry to say will be left behind by a number of forwards (not just Henry and Nistelrooy). I am sure NW is trying his best to bring in other players and for our sakes I hope he comes up trumps.

Erm, wrong Star Wiz!

The Malaysian Star is more highbrow (not difficult!) than the UK version...

Personally I wouldn''t be too worried about this report. To me, the whole tour is just a PR exercise to keep our sponsors sweet. The fact no-one picked up a serious injury is a big bonus for me. It''s not easy to go over to places like Malaysia, get used to the conditions and play great football.

At the end of the day it was just a friendly, it means nothing, it just keeps the players fit and gives the new boys a chance to play a game with their new club.

I''m sorry if the Malaysians didn''t get the type of football they wanted see but we aren''t the Harlem Globe Trotters, we are a small, newly promoted PL club with a long, hard season ahead of us!

1stW, I can only imagine that in a Muslim country like Malaysia, the ''Page 3'' girls would be entirely covered! It would be tasty titillation for textiles fetishists (say that fast 10 times).

However, our own Daily Star could certainly take a leaf out of their book in that respect. These tabloids with porn in should be relegated to the top shelf in my opinion. How is it right that a child can have ready access to sexually loaded material as found in the Sun, let alone the Daily Sport? At the same time we''re banned from seeing a mother''s nipple when breastfeeding on a TV advert. Outrageous!

This is silly. The only reason we went to Malaysia was for Proton, which is fine. You cannot take anything from friendly results, We took nearly 40 minutes to score at Dereham a few years ago, and Chelsea just drew with Oxford United does that mean that Chelsea are coming down with us.

It was purely a warm up and PR exercise, I personally dont see how playing in such conditions would be of much help to the lads energy levels, but Proton do have a large checkbook, and if we have to play there it should be in the warm up matches. If we''d played our hearts out we would have been "fatigued" like all the whinging gits at Arsenal after the last World Cup. And with respect to the Malaysians, I don''t think we should take much notice of their football press. Teams such as Charlton, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham, Birmingham City, Portsmouth have stayed up in recent years, and we were far and away the best team in the Football League last year.

There is really no reason to worry about these friendly results, especially as it was nowhere near a first choice line up. Hendo and Jarvis will not be starting games next year (maybe the season after), I wouldn''t have thought Mulryne, Abbey or McVeigh will be regulars either. Shackell will have to be used often if we cant bring in a tall centre half, but ideally he''d be eased in over the next two years.

Well pointed out Archie. I''m not overly bothered what the Malaysian press, or any press for that matter, think of us! We, the fans, know our abilities and our weaknesses better than any reporter

I was at the game and the Star''s report was much closer to the truth than The Pinkun''s. Of course it''s a pre-season game and it''s hot and we''ve only just bought a couple of new players..... but the standard was not high. Too many passes going astray and a lack of overall coordination.

What does that mean? Nothing as far as the new season is concerned. No-one wants to get injured and it was stiflingly hot and humid.

As far as the reasons for being there, it was not just for Proton. Malaysia has a huge and passionate interest in the EPL.If we can turn even a small percentage of those who follow it to support us (and buy our merchandising) it becomes highly lucrative. The more exposure we get in Asia, the more potential $''s there are for us.

But, it was still a poor game......
