sonyc 6,145 Posted February 17, 2023 Thanks for that. Remember him as a proper professional but it just didn't work out for him when he played for us - despite being a 'name' at Reading and after us a very decent committed player for Leeds. He clearly feels he didn't get the best out of himself when he was here - i think he was very diplomatic in his interview - because a few fans used to give him a hard time. Really pleased he came back to Norwich and that shows a professionalism in itself. Finally, will always remember at a Barnsley game, when he came over to the crowd at the end (was a 0-0?) and signed some autographs, including for my very young son at the time. Thought that was classy. A good fit perhaps with Wagner too - they will know each other well.
sgncfc 1,330 Posted February 17, 2023 He was the Kenny Maclean of his day - vastly underrated by supporters but loved by managers and coaches. A whole hearted player as I recall; very honest and uncomplicated. In short, just the kind of guy you need on your team.

More of a do the simple things well so the fancy players can get on with their stuff type of player. Never particularly flashy, or fancy, but a bit of a steady engine. I remember the arguments at the time being around him being a 100% player but didn't bring much to the team. The same thing used to be said of Didier Deschamps, even though his "water carrying" was essential to allowing the likes of Viera, Petit and Zidane more freedom going forwards. He and Makalele were absolutely instrumental. Edited February 17, 2023 by chicken
Graham Paddons Beard 2,791 Posted February 17, 2023 Thorn would be delighted to be compared to Holt and Tettey.

He was brought in to replace Holt I believe... so that's how that comparison comes about. Especially as Holt used to say in interviews that his job was to work hard, win the ball back and give it to players who could do something with it. Tettey may never have said that, but he certainly embodied it. I was always impressed that when Farke arrived, Tettey worked hard and got a LOT better at passing the ball further than 5-10yrds. He even started to show some skill. And it wasn't as if he had been given more freedom.

They joke about it with utter respect for each other. Hucks will point at how few goals Drury scored, Drury will retort with it being an even reflection of how many times Huckerby tracked back... 😅 One of the reasons that team worked so well and was purely, just short of Dean Ashton for half a season, was of how hard it worked as a team. People will point to the likes of Simon Charlton or another player as being the failure... but it really simply was down to one goal, to turn any of those many draws into a win and we'd have stayed up. In fact, in a recent panel (one that was free to view online I think) I believe Huckerby and another player from that era that was present, both agreed that Crystal Palace was where they felt they failed the club, a result that ended in a draw where they feel they had more than enough opportunity to come away with the win. The team had the best defensive record for a couple of seasons in a row in the Championship I believe.

Ulfotto 800 Posted February 17, 2023 A lot of praise for Andy Hughes here I remember him as being one third of one of the biggest downgrades in the club history. Out went Gary Holt, Damien Francis and Phil Mulyrne for various reasons In came Andy Hughes, Jason Jarrett and Carl Robinson. And so began a slow boring tedious march to League one enlivened only some of the most random loan signings in the history of the club One interesting fact was Hughes was signed mainly because of a good performance against Norwich scouting department really earning there corn there.
