king canary 8,944 Posted August 1, 2022 Probably been mentioned elsewhere but the 5 subs rule seems utterly pointless without expanding the size of the bench? In other leagues you can name 9 or even 12 subs. Having 7 will likely lead to subs for subs sakes like we saw with McCallum for Dimi on Saturday.
Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man 4,736 Posted August 1, 2022 Agreed. The new ruling about the five subs was announced a while ago, but it was only on Friday before the Huddersfield-Burnley game that I realised there were still only seven subs. It did seem peculiar that they hadn't raised it to nine.
lake district canary 4,878 Posted August 1, 2022 Don't understand the logic of it. So you can swap half your outfield team, so what - all that amounts to is a benefit to the more affluent clubs who can afford a strong bench.....not a good thing for football as a whole. Subs ought to be for injuries and slight tactical adjustments, not wholesale change, which is what can happen with five subs.
AJ 1,377 Posted August 1, 2022 Should be 4 subs from 7 players. 5 from 7 makes no sense. May as well swap goalkeepers with 2 minutes to go, just to waste some time

This also applies to lesser leagues, all the way down to grassroots, where players are taken many miles as a substitute and sometimes get no football. At grassroots level all players want to do is play the game, not be part of an over-eager manager who wants to show how wonderful he is. A reduction in substitutes would encoourage more players to find new clubs and perhaps keep them going instead of wasting their time sitting on benches.
Nexus_Canary 1,254 Posted August 5, 2022 Stop being so cynical, its great and really helps Man City give all their boys some playing time.
cambridgeshire canary 7,932 Posted August 5, 2022 Fair to say more subs will change the game in favour of big teams who have the better benches and players. Small teams get screwed as always. May be in our favour in the championship, but in the Prem the smaller teams will get very badly screwed. Imagine if we were in the prem right now. We can bring on Hernandez, McCallum, some youth players maybe.. Teams like Man City however can bring on De Bruyne, Grealish, Cancelo, Mahrez etc..
Capt. Pants 5,152 Posted August 5, 2022 I don't think extending the size of the bench is a great idea as it will hugely benefit clubs with 'bigger' squads. It would encourage too much in game fine tuning as well, probably to the detriment of the quality of the game. I'm not wholly in favour of 5 subs anyway
