He puts the effort it so despite the limited ability we can't really have a go. Yes he should only be a squad player at this level but it's not his fault we can't recruit a midfield. Always seemed like a poor man's Howson to me. 

To lighten the mood a little, when's the last time Scotland produced a truly class player? Top PL sides have midfielders from high ranked European / South American sides and we want to stay up playing two Scots in the middle?!

Tierney is a terrific player, been a tad unfortunate with injuries at times and hence perhaps doesn't get the credit he deserves. He's quick, aggressive, technically proficient, and decent positioning, all the things you would want in a world-class fullback. 

It's a tad ironic that Scotland have two world-class fullbacks and the rest is workmanlike.

Can't argue with that. He should be back up when we have an injury crisis in midfield, not the first name on the team sheet, but as you say that is not his fault. Also as you say, he puts the effort in. But he doesn't have the technical ability to make the kind of killing passes that Buendia or Vrancic could make, and his thinking is too slow anyway. By the time he passes, the opponents have got into position. He's one of Cantona's water carriers and he's ok at that.
