VAR - I don't really see the point

Recommended Posts

Referees cheated before VAR, and they're still cheating now it's being used. All it does is slow down the game. Get rid.

One positive for next season is we can just have a go at the ref on the field, and not have to worry about VAR.

VAR sucks the life out of the game. The pandemic has done the same.  A terrible season for football fans and a shame this had to be the season to be in the PL for those reasons alone.  Maybe they will learn to use VAR better in future seasons, but I can't see it with the standard of our refs in the UK.

It's not the quality of the on-pitch referee that I have a problem with, that guy has crowd and player influence, poor sight angles and the need to make real time decisions to contend with. It's been the utter incompetence of the video assisted referees who have all the advantages of replays from multiple camera, no crowd pressure and still cannot make a sensible decision, even after several minutes. If they made one in twenty decisions wrong that would be shocking, some days it's been one in two ..... or worse.

The key problem with VAR this season in the PL is simply that it hasn't been used correctly, and horribly used at times when it shouldn't be.

Having another look at a poor tackle to see if a red card is fair when the refs view wasn't perfect is absolutely fine, taking 2-3 minutes to judge if a striker's armpit was offside when NOBODY in the ground was even questioning them as being onside isn't.

It's meant to be used for CLEAR AND OBVIOUS errors, instead they're using to check far too many things that really aren't clear or obvious, and where the ref is in a perfectly sensible position to make the call anyway.

What's even worse is that despite having multiple angles, slow motion and god knows what else, these VAR officials are then making absolutely shocking decisions anyway!

There's too much confusion about parts of the rules of the game, too much time being wasted looking at unnecessary things, and I'm sure I read that the makers of the VAR system threatened to pull it from the PL because they simply weren't using it right.

Funny how a number of other leagues across Europe manage to use VAR without huge delays and scrutinising every single pass forwards to see if someone is a nanometre offside...

‘Clear and obvious’ seems to have been forgotten as a concept. If the decision cannot be ‘re determined’ after 2 VAR viewings (taking seconds) the original decision stands. Taking minutes doing multiple viewings with ridiculous lines drawn on the screen to finally prove (surprise, surprise) that Pukki was offside against Spurs was an absolute farce.

The game is still full of horrible inconsistency.

After our two red cards yesterday, how was it that Mustafi didn't even get a yellow for a nasty rake down  and stand on the back of Silva's leg? It was nothing short of evil. Punishment, nothing.

Simply confirms what was thought before but only known now. The mentality of referees in the country is a beta role more focused on not making an error than it is being in control.

They just come across as middle-manager types with no conviction. There's a reason Collina was so well liked.
