The rise of Grant Holt

Recommended Posts

Looking back over Holt''s career isnt it quite phenomenal the improvement he''s made in such a short time?

2008 signed for Shrewsbury for £170,000

2012 17 goals plundered in first Premier League season, touted for England and now worth £5,000,000

Are there any other players that have had such a meteoric rise in such a short space of time?

There was a dossier created by Mike Ashley at one point after relegation from the Premiership stating how much he would be prepared to sell certain players for. I believe Andy Carroll was on the market at £1 million.

Ian Wright is a good one:Was at Dulwich Hamlet when he was spotted by a C.Palace scout.. Signed in August 1985 (aged 22!)1990 he got his first England call up. He went onto make 33 appearances for England and scored 9 times.In 1991 he signed for Arsenal where he played 221 and scored 128 goals (a goal every 1.72 games!!!!)Pretty impressive considering he was a later starter.

Gary Birtles was another classic example. Signed for Forest from Long Eaton United aged 20, and spent his first two years in the reserves! He only got his first team chance because one of the regulars got injured, but kept his place and won two European Cup medals and several England caps in the next two seasons.

Justin Fashanu signed professional forms for us in December 1978 and less than two years later scored Goal Of The Season  before being sold for £1 million all within the space of three years.

Wayne Rooney made his debut for Everton aged 16 in 2002 and two years later was sold to Man Utd for £25.6 million.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has gone from League One to Euro 2012 in about a year, give or take.  Shame he''s part of a sh*t England squad though.

[/quote]Roeder offered £1m but was turned down.  We couldn''t stretch to any more.  Allegedly.

Gary Hooper-> Southend Reserves-Hereford-Scunthorpe-Celtic

Or Jackson Pilkington and Morison would have had their rise mentioned alot more if Holts wasn''t as spectacular.
