worst mistake of 2009?

Recommended Posts

Its gotta be the selling of joe lewis. We have had our fair share of good home grown keepers and to let one go on the cheap is just unjustifiable. Now we have to rely on loan keepers

Now we have to rely on loan keepers
I think if our biggest "mistake" was selling an inexperienced goalkeeper for £650,000 (so far, £400,000 initial and another £250,000 when Posh were promoted) then we would of had a pretty good year. The biggest mistakes that were made were the shotgun sacking of Glenn Roeder in the middle of a transfer window with no plan and then making Bryan Gunn manager off the back of one good result, a mistake then repeated by giving him another contract in the summer.

Appointing Gunn on a permanent basis for a second time after relegation from the top two divisions for the first time in many of our lifetimes. Those responsible should hang their heads in shame , big up to McNally for sorting the sham out though!

With two of the best young english keepers on our books how can this be a bad move?

Fair enough now we are relying on loan keepers because Theo has not proved to be the answer but we surely must accvept that the strategy of getting a keeper who could have done the job whilst the youngsters progressed was right. We certainly could not have three young keepers on the books who all were ambitious. It''s bad enough having one or two ambitious young keepers but three?

I am old enough to remember Leicester City selling Gordon Banks to Stoke because they had another young keeper on their books ..... Peter Shilton. Obviously the judgement has been made that the best prospects of the three are still with us!

And this Theo bashing should really stop. Judgement based on one match is never good. Remember that Graham Gooch bagged a pair in his first teat match for England ....... that did not make him a bad batsman. Fair enough Theo will never be a world beater but I bet he''s better than the one match we have seen.

It''s easy to say now that selling lewis (in 2008) was a mistake, but was it at the time?

He wasn''t likely to get a game with Marshall and gilks ahead of him, so his value (and arguably ability) wasn''t going to increase. Maybe he should have gone on loan for the remainder of 07/08 and for 08/09, but I''m

not sure we were in a position to turn down 400k + add ons for a 3rd choice keeper. Furthermore he was sold (in my opinion) to finance the signing of martin Taylor which didn''t end up happening unfortunately.
For me, it was one of those "where were you when you heard the news?" moments. I was driving to work, and was so shocked I nearly went straight across a junction - I think at that moment most supporters thought we were doomed. Thank God McNally was employed when he was!

IF we go back up to the Championship at the first time of asking, it would be nice if Delia and Michael could come out and thank McNally and Lambo for their sterling efforts and brilliant decision making, instead of just basking in the reflected glory. I feel sure if it had been left to the Stowmarket Two we would be wallowing in misery at the wrong end of League One now, with Bryan Gunn still playing at football manager with no real idea of what he was doing.

if we did not appoint gunn would not likely have had holt ... or alot of the players in our team that have helped us gain second place.

considering our team was full of loan failures last season im glad gunny was here as manager even for a short time .

thanks gunny for giving martin another chance , keeping hoolihan buying askou .

holt was a bargain .
