The signs are that Clingan is a decent player, so perhaps that should be what we are looking at rather than whether we needed to spend £m''s on him.I really do wish people could get away from this daft notion that players on a free transfer are not up to much. Yes, in the ''old'' days a free transfer usually meant a player who had been released, which suggested that they perhaps weren''t up to much - but now it is as likely that a player is still wanted by his club but has decided himself to let his contract run down so that he can decide where to go.
