Nothing wrong with free transfers if they are players the club you get them from want to keep.

Yeah Calderwood wants him to stay at Forrest and he''s a Northern Irish regular International. He would add much needed strength in depth to our flimsy squad, remember how crap we were without Fozzy against Ipswich as we had no one to replace him?!

He hasn''t signed yet anyway.

Let''s wait and see what the squad looks like in a month''s time.

Are big-spending clubs QPR and Ipswich not both linked with Clingan too, as well as newly promoted Forest trying to re-sign him? He must be rubbish then!

If he didn''t sign for us (the same applies for any other player, rightly or wrongly linked) we''d get the chorus of ''there goes another target, we can''t compete, where''s the ambition, drone, drone, drone!

I''m quite looking forward to seeing a dead ball specialist if he does sign - we''ve needed one since, er, er, ages!

The only decent ones I can remember are Ian Crook, Neil Adams and Phil Mulryne.

I think you''re spot on Freeza! Without going back too far!

I was gonna say Safri, but then his delivery was never great - he just fired in the odd thunderbolt!

The fee in any transfer is irrelevant - it is the quality of the player that you are getting that you need to look at.  The signs are that Clingan is a decent player, so perhaps that should be what we are looking at rather than whether we needed to spend £m''s on him.

I really do wish people could get away from this daft notion that players on a free transfer are not up to much.   Yes, in the ''old'' days a free transfer usually meant a player who had been released, which suggested that they perhaps weren''t up to much - but now it is as likely that a player is still wanted by his club but has decided himself to let his contract run down so that he can decide where to go.  This is what Clingan has done, and it far from means he is rubbish.

Agreed Branston.

Sol Campbell joined Arsenal for free and then Portsmouth for free - I suppose some would say he''s rubbish too.

Maybe because people see free and that they''ve not heard of him to assume they''re rubbish.  Like Kevin Doyle of Reading was not free I accept (80k) but was unknown!

[/quote]What is causing this IMO.  The past few seasons fan''s aspirations has been firmly trodden on.  So therefore,  fans assume the best freebies go to other teams, leaving us with the crud.
