silver fox 0 Posted July 17, 2007 I am sure Grant was disappointed when Earnshaw left and will be equally disappointed if Etuhu goes to Sunderland, but at the end of the day he needs players who WANT to play for Norwich City. I am not sure nowadays whether players are just ambitious and want to play at the highest level, or are just plain greedy. Apparently we had offered Etuhu an improved contract but he opted to talk to Sunderland. Personally I don''t think Etuhu will be a hit in the Premiership because of his inconsistency, I don''t think Earnshaw will be a revelation either. I have read that Huckerby is apparently p----d off, but he should just concentrate on his own game and leave Grant to sort out replacements. Marshall, Gilks,Otsemebor, Brellier, Cureton and Strihavka wanted to come and play for Norwich and I am confident Grant and his team will find more quality players who want to play for Norwich. Hog 0 Posted July 17, 2007 I am sure that Earnie and Etuhu and Safri etc etc all wanted to come and play for Norwich. Do you really think if the new signings are a revelation they won''t want to move up to a bigger club. Imagine Dave Striker scoring 30 goals this year, you will be saying exactly the same thing next year when he signs for a bigger club. Lets face it, for many years now, clubs like ours have served as shop windows!
albyella 0 Posted July 17, 2007 Agreed SF - there''s a lot of negativity going on at the moment, but you are right, we do need players who want to play for NCFC. For me Etuhu has blown hot & cold, and Safri is a part-timer - I would rather have players who may have a bit less (potential) ability but who are passionate and hungry. My only concern at this stage is whether PG is doing everything his way (I suspect he is), or are the board dictating to him.
Mr Whiz 0 Posted July 17, 2007 I see where you''re coming from with this one. Whilst i rated Etuhu on his day and i do think we will miss him, we have made a healthy profit on him which can be channelled into getting in a replacement. Both him and earnshaw had the clauses in thir contracts so our hands were tied, Etuhu was offered better terms by us and turned them down so lets let him go and concentrate on getting in a decent replacement who actually wants to play for the club. These contract clauses are often crucial in getting players into clubs and while i feel we let Earnie go on hte cheap i actually think the club did well to put Etuhu''s in at 1.5 million, a goood bit of business.Providing we replace Etuhu and bring in atleast one quality centre back i will be slightly optimistic for the up and coming season. Their should be a bit of money in the pot based on whats come in, all that we wait for now is to see how much of it grant is allowed to spend. I just hope when we do we arent foolish enough to put a release clause in their bloomin contract

Hairy Canary 754 Posted July 17, 2007 Thats right of course but the real question is why don''t players want to play for us. Fair enough the lure of the premiership is difficult to combat but when it comes to Huckerby (one of the most loyal players we have had at the club in recent years) publically saying that he is fed up and getting to the point that he might be looking to leave then something is very seriously wrong. The other side of the coin is that Grant is trying to attract good ambitious players to come here. How on earth is he supposed to do that when we are not able to persuade our best players to stay for more than a year or so.Lastly what sort of management leaves it''s staff in the dark over the direction of the club. Ok players come and go but there is obviously no confidence in the squad that the club is determined/able to sort things out or Huckerby would not have resorted to public statements. chicken 0 Posted July 17, 2007 I think you have to read more into what Huckerby is saying.I think he is annoyed that Etuhu is going and that Earnshaw is gone but partly what he is saying is why are we not trying to sign players that we can get to stay for the long haul?Players that are not going to want a "if it gets tough I am out of here" clause. I can understand Earnshaw wanting a buy-out clause and getting one but Etuhu!!! He was a reserve team player who we probably paid over the odds for at the time. Why on earth did Mr. Worthington agree to a clause? Because lets face it, the club do not do the negotiating (as in the board) its the management who do that. Talk about being sold down the river.I hopes this means that Safri is staying put. And that the club will learn and say thanks but no thanks in the future to players who want buy-out clauses or at least start them at £2million.Although I agree with Huckerby I do think part of what he is saying is that some of these players were obvious ship jumpers from the word go. Take Francis who again he mentions in his interview - the guy wanted to leave and that has nothing to do with how much the club wanted to keep him. Again the same could be said of McKenzie although there is more to that one than we will know for a while I think.Safri though is obviously not so keen on a move away. I do hope he stays because I think he could take on Etuhu''s role or allow us to play a 3-5-2 formation. One thing for sure is that we must start spending once more. Carlos Valderrama 0 Posted July 17, 2007 There are some good midfielders out there. Etuhu will be missed in my opinion. Perhaps his departure will allow grant to spend money on someone a little more creative, someone that would compliment the combatitive nature of Julian Brellier. My major concern to be honest is numbers again. The midfield is gonna take a major hammering and we will be thin on the ground. Maybe Strihavka''s czech mate is going to be a midfielder?
McCanary 0 Posted July 17, 2007
Good players want to play for ambitious clubs.
Not strictly true Mr Carrow. Good players want to play for clubs who will pay more than they are worth so they can pay their agent`s fees and outrageous wages.Loyalty does not exist in this age of football. The saddest thing is that any number of youngsters who are not good enough to play pro football would crawl the length of the country on their knees to play for pride............ Mr.Carrow 394 Posted July 17, 2007 Chicken, the board negotiate and agree contracts with players. The manager merely tells them who he would like and how much he thinks they are worth splashing out for.
