Varney the next Ashton?

Recommended Posts

That is what Dario Gradi thinks anyway surely time to make a move and before anyone says why would he come to us when he could go to any club in the championship here is why.

  1. We get in there first
  2. With Earnie out he is going play rather than sit on a bench
  3. We may be in mid table but we are still seen as a big championship club with a descent stadium and excellent training facilities
  4. We sell out evey home game, how many clubs in this league can say that
  5. Gradi will encourage him to come if he has to sell he would rather to us than some of the other clubs in this league
  6. Maybe Ashton will say good things about us, who knows

Too late... Derby are already rumoured to be putting in a £1.5million bid in the next few days...

Another potential great signing down the tubes while we sit on our hands and look on!!!  [:@]

Too late i ask? What ever happened to Gazumping offers???

Why not speculate to accumulate. As with Ashton, we broke the bank to purchase, then made a huge profit on his departure. Same could be said with this one.

Not sure that we actually have any proof that in this particular instance it is too late. However, the general point you are making is very good. It has been part of the reason that the last 3 summers have been so poor in respect of incoming transfers. Everyone decent has gone before we start looking. Now I appreciate that behind the scenes we may be making all manner of enquiries. Rumours are that PG has approached the board with a long list of targets i.e an A list, B list & C list whereas Worthy would just have identified one or two that he wanted - sadly there were generally from the Z list!!

There are still bargains to be had out there as we have shown with Chadwick and Ipswich have shown with Wright.

How much would it cost in total to bring in Camp, Lucketti, Spring, Bishop & Hayter? Probably not much more than £2 million and this would regenerate all areas of the squad and in Lucketti would give us the much needed leader centre half.

I just want to see a few new players in through the door to get some excitement back at Carrow Road - something urgently needs to be done to lift the atmosphere which was truly appalling before the Plymouth game. I think 5 people sang OTBC before the kick off!

Dario Gradi may well be saying that, but he would, wouldn''t he?  He is simply trying to bump up the price anyone may be prepared to pay for Varney.  All my Crewe supporting friends tell me that he really isn''t that great - one guy said the other day that despite his goals, everyone in the area of the ground he sits wants him dropped his overall play has been that poor.  They all rate Maynard much higher.

I say ok, give him a go - but don''t pay more than £500k for him.  However, Brown has been crucified on his arrival here on the say-so of Sunderland fans, so going by that precedent.......
