Ten back for a corner and Drury taking corners

Recommended Posts

I see we still bring all ten outfield players back for an opposition corner.  I seriousy cannot see the value in having Earnshaw and McVeigh back defending, other than they get in the way.  I do not have any top coaching qualifications, but surely if we head the ball out from a corner we need someone there to try and pick it up, or else it comes straight back in again.

Secondly I appreciate trying something different with Drury taking corners from the right side, but I believe we put ourselves under unnecessary pressure down the left side yesterday, because when he failed to get a decent cross in he was out of position and they exploited that on their right side.

Totaly agree with you silver on the ten man ploy - but its a feature of the managers tactics that has been around for seasons - leave earnie on teh hal way line - we might even benefit by picking up a clearance rather than leaving their man to keep possession.

As far as drurys corners and free kicks were concerned if anything I thought they were too good  and our team were not reaidng them well enough. They were far better than last seasons continual failure to get them over the first man

Some were poor but there were several (and a good proportion) which arrived in the danger zone at chest height but none of our players attacked it, leaving beresford with too easy a take unchallenged.   But that means the pace and delivery were good enough to clear the first man and dip to a decent height for an attacker to hit hard.  If we can have one of those deliveries and have earnie or another player getting in ahead of the keeper it will be an excellent chance.

Eons before anybody had the audacity to say "maybe this blokes not the best candidate for manager", one or two people were saying "why doesnt he leave someone up for corners?" In fact some brave folk actually posed this question at supporters roadshows,. As I remember the man himself got quite shirty and defensive and we never really got a good reason. Drury is a half decent defender but never should be used in any sort of creative role, and some around me yesterday were horrified to see him taking corners, most of whhich ended up in the goalies hands. Hopefully some, with more influence than us posters, will also have spotted this and it will be sorted out on the green fields of Colney between now and Saturday.

[quote user="can u sit down please"]

Something my team do when we play is leave 3 up top as the opp always try to defend with a spare man at the back.

Leave Hucks, Earnie and Croft up top and hit em on the counter!!

I am of the understanding that they belief is that if you bring everyone back, there is a great chance of hitting the other team on the break - sometyhing you can achieve better with pace - which we have.

I''m not saying that i like it, but it''s something worth thinking about

leaving Croft forward would be a good idea, after giving away the penalty at Leeds and being lucky not to do the same against Preston.

As for Adam Drury the dead ball specialist, please. The guy can defend but he struggles to pass the ball ten yards nevermind thirty.

It seriously does work. Attack is the best form of defence....instead of them attacking they are so conscious of the guys on the half way line they ALWAYS leave more men back.

With the attacking quality we now seem to have in the team i just think it would work really well.

I mean what use are the 3 at the back anyway!!

What has been most noticable with corners is that City have ditched man-to-man marking, and switched to zonal defending. Not all of our players looked entirely comfortable with this setup, and seemed confused as to whether they should stay in position or attack the incoming cross. This needs more work on the training pitch if you ask me.
